    Spindle encoder setup

I have a Light machine turning center that I retrofitted with new motors and drives. I got the axis to work but now I would like to be able to hook the spindle encoder up. The spindle has a us digital encoder and then a small pc board plugs into it. Then a cable runs to the computer or did on the old system. I was looking at Nist lathe and I think I like this setup. I was wonder what the interface between emc2 and a spindle encoder is. Has anyone on here worked with one of these machines? What is the small pc board between the encoder and the old system? Can I applie 5 volts to the encoder and then send the ouput from the encoder to emc2? Any thought or advice would be great. Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon.

You may have to reverse engineer the board, look to see if any IC's or Transistors are identifiable etc.
It could well be single ended to differential convertor board.
