Danny's tutorials are $20 , and all the software is freeware , in my opinion it is a must have thing , i can assure you the first picture you do will be worth the 20 bucks , the information and step by step instructions are very clear and informative

Use Mecsoft Freemill, also download Mecsoft Visualcam (it comes with visualmill but can be installed on its own and is free), visualcam lets you play a bit with DXF, STL, and 3D files and lets you save in a several different formats.
I also downloaded downloaded cut3d, even though I can't save any tool path it gives great previews.
