    Voltage Distance from work Ratio

    I have a Hypertherm 1250.

Is there any info on the distance from the work to the tip and voltage ratio?

Does the distance change with the current setting?

Is it something like 0.005" per arc volt or something close to that?

I have seen some info in the past on here but can't find it again.

    Thanks for any help.

It's all in the user manual (Cut Charts in the back). Normal cut gap is .063 with gap volts varying between 135 to 150 for different materials. Use the suggested gap volts, feedrate for the tip and current you are using.

The distance is about .005 per arc volt (+ or -). It changes with different types of material slightly but the plasma process is a constant current process and if the load changes (gap) and the current remains constant then Ohms Law says voltage has to vary in proportion. Kicker is that very little voltage change percentage wise of the actual cutting voltage is a much higher percentage in the cut gap distance.

If you are cutting along at a fixed speed with the arc voltage control active....and you reduce the arc voltage by 5 volts....you will see an approximately .020" reduction in torch to work distance. This is a rule of thumb....it will vary depending on the plasma gas, moisture in the air, air pressure, speed that you are cutting at...and amperage and condition of the consumables! Arc voltage height control is a great way to control torch to work distance as long as none of the variables are changed.

Thanks for the replies Jim and Tom. That should get me into the ball park with my THC.

    Thanks
