    Grooving HELP!

We are machining 304 Stainless Steel, we are putting a groove in the OD which ends up being 1'wide. I was just going to see what yall would think a good Feed/RPM rates would be. The groover I am using is .236 wide, Thanks for any help!

how big is the machine? how large is the part? how far away from the spindle is groove? are you using cutting oil or coolant? what kind of insert? all these things play into what you need to do.

We have a HAAS SL20, the stock of the part is .75" but after I turn the part down the groove starts at .7", the groove has a depth of .131". From the face of the jaws the groove is 2.78" away and from there it goes away from the jaws 1". I am using Coolant, I have a iscar grooving tool holder with a carbide insert. Thanks!

personally i think that groovers is way too wide for such a small part. i would try something about .125 wide. i would plunge in at about 200 sfm at .002 IPR to start. if it sounds good and is making good chips you can slowly ramp up from there. if you really need to push it 600 sfm and .003-.004 IPR, but you need to make sure you have dedicated stainless inserts. i believe the grade iscar recommends is IC908. good luck.

I wouldn't even use a narrow grooving tool. One inch wide you can turn using a pair of tools such as Iscars SVJNR/L. Plungin in on something 0.7" diameter is going to be chatter prone.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.
