    What Drives?

I have a Bridgeport Boss 5 base and table with a standard head mounted.
The stepper motors are already attached. No more Bridgeport electrics.
I want to get this thing running with the existing steppers if I can.
    The motors are Slo-Syn 1100 oz/in 1.8 volt, 20 amp.
Gecko drives will handle 10 amp max. Is there a better suited drive for these high current motors?

Are the stepper motors 4, 6, or 8 wire?

    6 wire
The also have encoders mounted, which is a different problem?
I am hoping to use the encoders to power a dro just to check for missed steps.

Gecko 203V's have a maximum of 7amps. You might want to try Cobra drives from Larken Automation. They are rated for 10amp and 90vDC.

You could run the steppers in bipolar series which might drop the amp draw too.

For an encoder driven DRO you might want to take a look at EZDRO.
