Hello everyone. We have a Multicam Series I router at work and am upgrading to Mach 3. I am familiar with Mach 3 and ARTCAM and have succsesfully built new controllers for the motors which all work fine.

The Problem however is that when we turn the spindle on (a PERSKE spindle with its own controler) the Z axis moves up or down depending on it's last movement. We have derived that it maybe back EMF causing the stepper to move but short of putting a new spindle on what can we do.

I would like to keep the existing control boards KTA-263 from ocean controls http://www.oceancontrols.com.au/moto...ontrollers.htmand their breakout board. Do we need a different driver board or would sheilding the spindle be a better idea?

those are leadshine drivers, i had the same problem, ensure the wiring from the motor on z is correct and tight are you using the same motors and are they 4,6 or 8 wire steppers, are you using bipolar series or parallel ?

All the motors are the same and they all move atm.They are 8 wire Vexta's wired bipolar paralell. The manufacturer of the board seems to think opto couplers on the dir and step will fix the problem but??????

What attention has been paid to proper grounding and bonding of the whole system?
It is could be likely that poor grounding rather than EMI in general is the cause.

if it is only a problem when the spindle is on then i would look at grounding like al has said

seems we have succes ; yes all grounds were good ,breakout and stepper boardswere being powered by the power supply of the pc (brand new) and they are also mounted inside this same pc. Solution; chaged power suply for the boards buy using external power suply and moved the power/control wires for the Perske motor further away from the pc , thanks to all who replied
