    Hiwin Rails/Grease fittings/lubrication?

    Hi All,

Please excuse the question, if it appears to be dumb, but I was wondering what tools you use to lubricate hiwin rails?

I have read through their literature, and I know the rails have grease fittings, but one of their smaller rails (MGN15 series) has a very small fitting. Is there a special grease gun that is used for these, or are there any special fittings that need to be acquired for applying lubrication?

    Also, what type of lubricant?

If you guys have any sources that sell anything like this, I would appreciate the information.

Thanks in advance for any guidance...

Not much help, but I saw a small THK grease gun on Ebay a while back, so Hiwin probably offers something similar.

I bought HIWIN rails and blocks as well for my cnc. I am not finished with it yet but I was wondering the same thing. I think mine have regular grease fittings, I was more or less wondering what to lube them with....

You need a small tapered tip on your grease gun. Usually there's a semi spherical depression with a little ball check in the middle. The grease gun tips come with various radii on the nose, and it should be close to a match. If not, a bigger radius on the tip than the depression will work. Be sure to wipe out the fitting so you don't blow grit into the bearing when pumping grease.
You need to push it into the depression the whole time you are pumping, since it's not self locking like a Zerk fitting. Don't pump too much such that it blows out the seals.

You can use standard marine grease. I get it at northern tool where i'm at. The grease is red. I have used it on rails for years. Do not get in the habit of over greasing it only causes a mess. You'll know if your over greasing because you get large clumps of grease on the rails. Good luck. Judleroy
