    Traditional Making of Granite Surface Plates?

    What was the traditional way of making granite surface plates back during WWII? Was it a hand operation like scraping metal plates using three separate pieces to reference against each other?

    Old thread... but...

    Surface plates were/are/can be touched down with an overhead grinding wheel.

    Guy Lautard covers the making of surface plates in The Machinist's Second Bedside Reader.
