    need to replace spindle encoder

    machine: hardinge vmc 1000
    control: fanuc 0-MD
    spindle encoder: sumtak lhe-428 1024

I get spindle alarm 47 (Detects incorrect position coder signal count operation) I need to replace encoder but this model is discontinued. I'm looking to replace by another model but how can i be sure that it is compatible?

thank a lot, i propably order to you in few day, is it realy a sumtak lhe-428 1024 or a compatible one? I'm not very familiar with that stuff, for connector, i just have to put same color of wire at the same position than the old one and it will work?

Is this a shaft encoder or through-hole?
You will find a replacement either at Renco or Hengstler, Koyo are also a low cost resource.
5vdc 1024 line differential should work OK.
BTW, Sumtak were taken over by Renco, now heidenhain own Renco.

Here is a Renco they are dumping these new/old models, ebay # 200369969848 $90.00
It is 1024 with a 1/2" shaft size, the cables are tricky to make up so if you go for it, get them to supply a cable.

how can i do to know each wire function. there is 9 wire. i think it is:
    A
    not A
    B
    not B
    Z
    not Z
    Vcc
    0V
but wath is the last wire and how to know the color of each of them?

You will most likely have a shield as the 9th wire.
The Sumtak info I have for the LHE series is:
    White +5v
    Black 0v
    Red A
    Pink /A
    Olive B
    Blue /B
    Yellow Z
    Orange /Z
    shield
They are almost identical to the Renco style on ebay right now.

I took the LHE info from the Sumtak catalogue and it shows the white wire as 5+.
Do you have 9 wires counting the shield?

yes 9 counting the shield and your info seems to match with my encoder. Can i use a diferent ppr encoder and just change a prm?

I would think it would be changeable, but a brief look through the parameters did not show it, just the spindle gear ratio's.

finally i choose the low cost option and bought a koyo encoder (TRDA-VA1024V8-40-ABZ). I hope i make a good choice. Like i said, i'm not familiar with this stuff but i'm confident that i will succeed.

    Thanks to evrybody

Hopefully these are 5v differential as suggested in post #4, some are single ended or open collector.
I could not see the specs for the one you selected on the site?

    Hi Samu,
If the Koyo one you purchase doesn't work make sure to contact us. by the way you may want to know the parameter for Spindle orientation position, if the position is off you can change the parameter 6577, either increase or decrease the value

Be sure that if it doesnt works i`ll think to you. Hope that i will not loose money trying to save some!

    Al,
in the spec they say that output circuit is line driver output 26C31 compatible. Good thing or not?

Sorry to hijack thgis thread but since I kind of have the same problem probably I can get helped easier.

I need to replace a magnetic encoder SUMTAK MSK 015 1024. Do I have any options? This one is obsolete and the ones they have in ebay they are US$2,000

The lathe machine is a hardinge conquest 42, right now I can not remember the fanuc control it has.

    Thanks
