I have been working on taking my SW parts into Artcam to program tool paths for my CNC. I played with it so that I can also index parts in rotation to do 3D parts including the undercuts. I have 4 axis machine, but indexing the part in 15 to 60 deg. increments works so much better, than only Y, Z, and rotation axis tool paths. By indexing the parts in SW, I get X, Y, Z, and rotation all at the same time.

If anyone else is playing with this, let me know, and I will walk you through what I have learned. I would also like to know what you have done to get full 3D machining out of a 3 or 4 axis router.

solidworks is not the best tool to do this (artistic modeling)
try zbrush

you can have a good result with project on suface 's features

rhino and generally all solid modeling program wont be capable for that..
for rhino theres a plugin clayoo.. that capable for..

counting on how much you invest heres some order from free up to costly programs..


blender is free, capable for models organic models also similar like solid models

gmax distributed by turbosquid also free and actually 3dsmax lighter version

hexagon cost 20 and sure you can do with.

silo 3d also capable.. its already 60-80 dollar..

I using silo3d but hexagon also a big bang..
hexagon also has many manipulating feature..

beyond these 3dcoat as a hobby version $100 very close to zbrush...

all these programs way better for organic modeling..
that's why clayoo plugin added for rhino... but that cost 700...
