need a linux guru... gdmless boot?

    Hey-

Its been quite some time since I spent hours at the command line in linux and wanted to inquire about how to boot directlly into the command line, or better yet how to boot directly into emc2. Is it possible to boot directly into emc2 without having gdm running? I feel embarrassed asking, but it's really been that long for me...

I just dont really have any interest in doing anything else on this controller except emc2 and I'd also feel better if the OS had a 'top' list that is as minimalist as possible!

    thanks for any help!!!

edit: if I can't get it to boot directly into emc2 without a display manager, then how would I go about getting xdm going?
    thanks again!

You need to change the default runlevel from 5 to 3
Edit /etc/inittab and lok for the initdefault entry, change the 5 to 3, save the file.
Next time you reboot, it will com up without X running.

If you don't want to reboot immediately, then just type:

    telinit 3

    to change to runlevel 3.
    Regards

hmmm no luck finding the inittab...

I did the telinit 3 though and am rebooting now...

it seems to freezeup at "running local bootup scripts"

    edit:
ok, i seem to have gotten myself into more trouble here...

i installed fluxbox only to find out that i cant run emc2 IN fluxbox...
either that or im calling it wrong...
is it not in the default paths?
