Convert three phase transformer to single phase?

I've got an ignorant question; can a three phase transformer be converted to run on single phase?

I was wondering if it could be done as follows:

As long as the transformer is wired in a Wye configuration, a person could tie lines A, B. & C together on the primary side creating three coils in parallel.

The three secondary coils would also be wired in parallel.

This would create a large current, single phase transformer.

Does this make any sense? How would a person calculate the output knowing the original specs?

Attached is a wye transformer diagram.

I do not see any reason why i would not be possible and practical.

I would however connect the three secondary windings via three low voltage low wattage globes just to make sure there are no circulating currents under no load conditions.

The VA ( volt amp rating ) of the original transformer is what you can expect under single phase regime.

Thanks for the response, but I do not understand what you mean by "low voltage low wattage globes".

That would be light bulbs on the top side of the world.

This does not work, the three coild are on a single Iron core so the magnetic flux would cause the current to rise as the colis fight against each other. I tried it like this on a Tfmr that was supposed to pull about 18A I hit the kill switch at 85V.

I have managed to use the two outer legs to work in 180 degrees as per this thread. Search google for this "Can you Run a three phase Transformer from single phase?" its on the PM site

    Sorry this should have read:

This does not work, the three coils are on a single iron core so the magnetic flux would cause the current to rise as the coils fight against each other. I tried it like this on a 3ph transformer that was supposed to pull about 18A I hit the kill switch at 85A.

I have managed to do something similar. What I did was to use the two outer legs to work in 180 degrees. Search Google for this "Can you Run a three phase Transformer from single phase?" its on the PM site that details how I did it.
