    Tooling suggestions

    Hi,

Im looking to cut some simple parts, and would like to mill a slot/groove for a spring clip. I dont have a lathe, and am not sure what type of tool would be best for this, I found these http://www.grizzly.com/products/Conv...8-Radius/H3341

Would that be an appropriate tool to cut a horizontal groove?

    Thanks!

look for a slitting saw + manrdrel the same thickness as the snap ring you are planning on using, you can find then in any thickness down to the gnats a@#

Your drawing is showing a square bottom and the cutter you are linking to would give you a round bottom so I don't think it would be ideal for a spring clip. As was mentioned, a slitting saw would work well. A woodruff cutter might also work if the groove you are cutting is quite wide.

I know you didn't ask for it but this post has some G-Code for doing something similar: http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showpo...7&postcount=43

A woodruf cutter could also work. I have used them before to make retention ring grooves in parts that would be difficult to turn.

The groove type doesnt matter much to me, its only purpose is to retain a clip. The slitter saws are much cheaper than the cutter I linked to, which is good- but I wonder if they will last very long.

    Thanks for the info guys
