Random question about Face Mill angle

    Hi,
I saw this add on Shars Tooling Website: http://www.shars.com/.
    http://www.shars.com/products/view/7...ll_SEHT_Insert

It made me wonder why a 45* set angle for cutters would have increased feed rates over a 90* set angle. Seems like it should be the same.

    Sorry, random question. >.<

    Anyone know though?

    Face Mill Approach Angle

    Hi,

A 45deg approach exerts less radial pressure on the workpiece than a 90deg approach, so you will find you can plough through quicker without as much shrieking (from the cutter that is).

It does, however, exert more axial pressure, so make sure the workpiece is secure!

Have just started having some experience with Feed Mills. The very shallow lead angle means you can feed at about 1mm to 1.5mm per tooth per per rev. Downsides are you can only cut about 1mm to 1.5mm deep (and you don't get much warning of your cutter about to explode). They seem to work best when fully-engaged, eg helical milling.
