I am looking for others who would be interested in a control retrofit project for the South Bend Magnaturn 1218 Turning Centers. This is the Hydraulic system machines. I have considered a control upgrade for these machines since I own 5 of them. The one I had been using has developed a control problem and that has renewed my thoughts about control upgrade. I am not interested in trying to re-invent these machines but would make the following changes:
1. The Hydraulic spindle would be replaced with a VFD and motor of maybe 3-5HP
2. The motion hydraulics would be retained and controlled by the original stepper motors that throttle the hydraulic valves.
3. The I/O board may or may not be replaced.
4.The scales may need to be upgraded.
5. The control would use Dynomotion products since their's is supposed to handle this type of stepper throttle arangement.
( If anyone knows of another control option, I'm open to any ideas)
