    Alright, the first thing I'm going to have you cut & paste some stuff from the shell so we can see how it gets recognized.

    1. Unplug the pendant (if it's plugged in)
    2. Power up your pathpilot controller and wait for it to complete loading
    3. Type "control-alt-x" to bring up a shell
    4. Plug in the pendant
    5. Type "dmesg" and copy and paste the last several lines here (hint: type "firefox &" to open up firefox)
    6. Type "lsusb" and paste everything here (that's LSUSB in lowercase)
    7. Type "cat /var/log/messages" and paste the last several lines here

    Anyways, let's install the hal_input extension. This is part of the normal linuxcnc distribution, and interfaces with USB HID devices like your pendant. There are two files: hal_input and linux_event.py. The following instructions assume you have PP setup as a PCNC 1100 controller. Do this from the command prompt (control-alt-x):

    1. cd /tmp; wget http://justinmitchell.net/pp/hal_input.tbz    (if you don't have internet access, copy this to a usb drive, plugin, then type "cp ~/gcode/USB/hal_input.tbz /tmp")
    2. tar jxvf hal_input.tbz   
    3. cd hal_input
    4. cp hal_input ~/tmc/bin/  
    5. cp linux_event.py ~/tmc/lib/python/
    The files are now in place, but you need to edit a config file to load the extension. If you're not familiar with editing text files on linux, I recommend the "pico" text editor. It's easier to use than some of the others.

    6. pico ~/tmc/configs/tormach_mill/tormach_mill_5i25.hal
    7. Use the arrow keys to scroll down to line 32 (just below "loadusr -W usbio")
    8. Type:   loadusr -W hal_input -KRAL VistaCNC 
    9. control-o (to save)
    10. control-x (to quit)
    11. sudo reboot
    If you get errors upon reboot, it means that you (or me ) made a typo in one of the previous steps. No biggie... just hit control-alt-x and check everything. Or you can just install the 1.8.2 update and start over.

    Assuming there are no errors, type "admin halmeter" at the MDI prompt. This brings up a list of all the pins, signals, and parameters in PP. Scroll down and find the ones that look like "input.0.x". If these exist, then it means hal_input has successfully loaded. Each of these inputs correspond to a button/knob on the pendant. Try clicking on several and hitting buttons on your pendant and see if the output value changes. There's no need to do this for all of them... I just want to make sure that it is working.

    Next I'm going to have you save this list to a text file. First attach a USB thumb drive to the computer.

    Now open up a command prompt (control-alt-x) and type:

    There's an error here in my instructions. It looks like the OS mounts the USB drive as a subdirectory of ~/gcode/USB/. To find out what that directory is, type "ls ~/gcode/USB", then insert that subdirectory into the commands I wrote above. If that doesn't make sense, just ask.

    I tried to follow the instructions. I grabbed a Windows version of wget and downloaded the file, copied to USB drive, etc. When I typed ctrl-o to save the edited .hal file I had to type enter to get it to actually save things. All commands appeared to complete without error. I forgot to remove the USB drive prior to the sudo reboot so it tried to boot from the USB drive! Removing the USB drive and rebooting it shows the pretty Tormach pictures and then dies with "Machine control software experienced an error. Install a software update." Ctrl-alt-x gets me to a command prompt and pico seems to show a proper edited file. Suggestions for troubleshooting?

    OK, I wrote a tiny little script to copy the files in the place. Download http://justinmitchell.net/pp/pendant.tbz (with firefox, or whatever) and copy it to your usb drive. Then plug it in and decompress it somewhere:

    Replaced <diskname> with whatever your USB drive showed up as in the previous steps.

    cp ~/gcode/USB/<diskname>/pendant.tbz /tmp/
    cd /tmp
    tar jxvf pendant.tbz
    cd pendant
    ./install.sh
    The output should just show three files being copied, and no errors. Then "sudo reboot".

    If you still get an error, try copying /home/operator/gcode/logfiles/pathpilotlog.txt to the USB disk, and post it as an attachment here.
