Main drives for belt-driven and coupled machine tool spindles

Nuremberg (Germany), July 6, 2009

At this year's EMO trade show for machine tools in Milan, Siemens Drive Technologies ispresenting for the first time its main drive systems of the 1PH8 motor series for belt-drivenand coupled machine tool spindles. The motors are characterized by their excellentdynamic response, smooth running properties and low vibration levels. They therefore addgreater precision to the machine tool spindles, thus helping to increase productivity.

Siemens is showcasing its new 1PH8 range of motors for belt-driven and coupled machine toolspindles at the EMO 2009 machine tool fair. The motors have been designed as main drives andare available as asynchronous and synchronous versions. The 1PH8 motors feature excellentdynamic response, smooth running properties and low vibration levels. This means that machinetool spindles can be operated with greater precision, improving workpiece quality and productivityas well.

Compared to the previous 1PH7, 1PH4, 1PM6 and 1PM4 versions, the power output range hasbeen increased. The motors are available as main drives with power outputs ranging from 2.8 kWto 1,340 kW. Different bearing designs extend the range of possible applications. The motors havebeen perfectly matched to the Sinamics S120 drive system, simplifying commissioning andenhancing the control response. For applications requiring a high degree of compactness, thesynchronous version of 1PH8 motors can also be used. There are motors available with a solid orhollow shaft, different cooling methods such as water cooling, forced ventilation or, in future, selfcooling, plus absolute-value and incremental encoders. Thanks to the extremely large powerrange, the high speed range of up to 20,000 r.p.m. and the modular design principle, the motorsare suitable as standard drives for conventional machine tool spindles.
