The Institute for Machine Tools and Production Processes (IWP) as an organizational component of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Chemnitz University of Technology combines the professorships of Machine Tools and Forming Technology, Forming and Joining, Adaptronics and Functional Lightweight Structures in Production, Micro Manufacturing Technology and Virtual Manufacturing Technology. The focus is on the implementation, promotion and coordination of research and teaching in the fields of machine tools and production processes, including the methods and processes of production engineering as well as the design and function of production systems.

The main areas of application are mechanical engineering, the automotive industry and its suppliers, as well as medical and micro-production technology. These areas are characterised in particular by the application of information and communication technologies, modelling and simulation techniques and functional integration through manufacturing technology. The challenge and opportunity at the same time is the ongoing digitalization and its innovative use within the framework of Industry 4.0 to strengthen Germany as a business location.

The personnel unit of the management of the professorships Machine Tools and Forming Technology, Adaptronics and Functional Lightweight Construction in Production as well as Forming and Joining together with the management of the scientific divisions of the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU guarantees basic research geared to industrial needs and training of students that is appropriate for their later assignment.
