The ?Erlebniswelt Werkzeugbau? of the WBA is an environment in which different systems for solving specific problems are developed and exhibited. Due to the rising demands of customers with regard to the geometry of parts to be manufactured by the tool and also the procedural demands for shorter delivery periods, high quality standards and a transparent cost analysis, a high process mastery and continuous transparency along the entire order fulfillment process is required. As there is no holistic solution for the various challenges at different points in the production process, the WBA is focused on developing and testing specific solutions as demonstrators. In particular, the connection of these systems is of key importance since the creation of isolated industry 4.0-solutions opposes the goal of increasing efficiency. Experiencing what is possible and then making the choice best for you ? This is the motto of the ?Erlebniswelt Werkzeugbau? at the WBA.

The demonstration tool shop of the WBA is an essential part of the cluster for production technology on the RWTH Aachen University campus and serves as a test environment for piloting innovative production concepts for companies using single and small series production. With its extensive and modern machinery for the core technologies of milling, turning, grinding, wire-cutting EDM, die-sinking EDM as well as a diverse range of supporting technologies. As a reproduction of the entire process chain, from design, to CAM programming and production planning, to manufacturing, the WBA can serve many different stakeholders in the tool and die industry. As a leading provider of solutions for companies in the tool and die industry, the demonstration tool shop offers a unique test environment with the character of a research laboratory, making it possible for companies using single and small series production to research and experience industry 4.0. In this environment, together with approximately 80 member companies and cooperation partners, approaches and solution for the single and small series production of the future are developed and piloted in realistic conditions.

The goal of the WBA is to advance current research topics with high practical relevance together with its members in a targeted manner. The aim is to comprehensively answer all questions of producing companies. For this purpose a research roadmap was created in the context of the business area of research. Here all current research projects can be arranged along the lifecycle of a tool according to topic areas in the industry. Both technological and organizational topics are researched in the form of contract research and consortial research projects. The included companies guarantee a high practical relevance, while the associated research institutes secure the theoretical part. Our research activities enable us to develop optimal solutions from our knowledge of the newest developments and technologies and implement them on site. The consulting of industrial companies is based on the unique competencies of WBA Tooling Academy Aachen in the tool and die industry. This is the result of the scientific approach of our highly motivated employees paired with a practice-oriented point of view. Executing around 50 consulting projects worldwide every year, this ensures a targeted and well-founded support for both internal and external tool shops as well as the adjacent product engineering and series production departments. The consulting approach is workshop-based and involves company employees in the project right from the start. And this is the key ? initiation of change process in the company by the employees themselves to guarantee high probability of long-term success beyond the WBA consulting.

The WBA supports the tool and die industry with regard to qualification and further education for trainees and managers on wide-ranging qualification levels for technological and organizational questions. All extra-occupational offers are based on modern methodical-didactic concepts and offer you and your colleagues a high degree of flexibility in both the academic and non-academic areas with its modular composition. It is meant for production managers and skilled workers in production as well as managers and directors of companies in the tool and die industry. A high practical relevance is guaranteed in all further education formats via applied learning games, use cases and speakers from the industry.

In order to realize practical and industrial research, consulting and further education, the WBA closely cooperates with leading companies of the tool and die industry. Thus, science and practical experience can be interlinked successfully. On the one hand, the purpose of the cooperation is to communicate information and ideas with respect to current technological and organizational developments in the tool and die industry. On the other hand, the members of the WBA have extensive opportunities to participate in further education programs, projects, studies and best-practice groups as well as utilize the infrastructure of the demonstration tool shop on the RWTH Aachen Campus.
