Significant Relief in COSCOM Tool Preparation
Nussbaum AG manufactures high-quality fittings and system components for drinking water supply in Trimbach, Switzerland. Production takes place on milling and turning machines as well as on special-purpose machines such as rotary transfer machines. Every day, several complete tool assemblies are measured using the Italian presetting device from Speroni. Recently, this and other processes were integrated into the COSCOM ECO- System (central data platform).
As a leading manufacturer of sanitary systems in Switzerland, Nussbaum employs around 200 people in production. Manufacturing is characterized by a high variety of variants, with lot sizes ranging from small to medium. Nussbaum manages several thousand different complete tool assemblies, which are changed multiple times per shift.
Fast and reproducible measurement is an important factor for stable production operations. For this reason, the company has been using a Speroni STP 46 Futura CNC model since 2014, which, according to the company, continues to provide consistent accuracy and repeatability after more than 12 years of use.
According to Andreas Röthlisberger, Head of Resource Management, the system measures between 50 and 80 complete tool assemblies per day. The measurement of a complete tool takes approximately one minute.
Speroni’s expansion from Italy into Switzerland was supported by a long-standing partnership with the CNC tool manufacturer BIG KAISER (today BIG DAISHOWA), from which the project with Nussbaum developed. The collaboration between Nussbaum and Speroni has been in place for more than 12 years.
The STP Futura 46 Full CNC is equipped with the Speroni Lasso Function, enabling precise scanning of complete tool profiles, as well as a range of HSK adapters that support the repeatability and changeover accuracy. These features optimize tool management and setup, as well as minimize downtime.
Digitalization Project with COSCOM
In 2021, Nussbaum decided to digitalize its production processes. COSCOM, a German software system provider, was commissioned to implement the project, supporting the rollout step by step with targeted employee training.
For the digitalization of presetting, COSCOM and Speroni developed interfaces between COSCOM’s tool management software ToolDIRECTOR VM and Speroni’s SDS software. This integration enables seamless management of tool data and measurement orders, currently handling more than 5.500 tool jobs with maximum efficiency and full traceability.
For COSCOM, this was the first interface to Speroni systems. “We already have extensive experience in connecting other presetting devices. Speroni was not a hurdle for us. On the contrary, the collaboration expanded our portfolio, allowing us to state today that our data platform is also compatible with Speroni,” explains Christian Erlinger, Managing Director at COSCOM.
As a result, Nussbaum has significantly improved its entire tool data flow. Measurement programs and master data such as diameter, overall length, and projection length are systemically linked. This enables largely automated and reproducible tool measurement. In addition, tools and equipment have been clearly assigned to articles and jobs. “Our setup technicians receive fully prepared tool carts and transfer the verified tool data directly to the CNC controls. The new process has increased transparency, reduced errors, and made setup procedures both more efficient and safer,” confirms Röthlisberger.
To fully map the tool lifecycle, storage and retrieval systems of Brütsch Rüegger as well as Kardex storage lifts were also connected to ToolDIRECTOR VM. Through multiple viewer workstations distributed across the two-story hall, employees can monitor tool inventory and usage at any time.
The goal of the digitalization project was to provide all relevant information directly at the workstation. The transition has been very positively received by employees and is perceived as a significant relief in daily work.
