SMX 5224 Horizontal 5-Axis Special Machining Center for Titan Cutting

This new 5-axis special horizontal machining center stands for a whole new generation of ultra-robust and high-performance machines with outstanding features for the machining of most heavy-duty materials like titanium, Inconel and other materials and alloys primarily used in the aerospace sector.

This machine also uses the hydrostatic guided Z-axis-ram already known from our large Production Module series FM 4+X. The excellent vibration-absorbing and stabilizing features of this axis as well as the high-performance milling drive with a 37 kW strong HSK-A 125 in combination with the base machine made of composite-material result in record setting metal cutting capacities, precision and finish qualities! Thanks to the 3000 mm long and 1000 mm wide swing rotary table with an integrated rotary table of 1000 mm a wide work piece range of chassis parts up to large structural components can be machined, not only for the aerospace sector.

This machining center was designed for the complete machining of flatbed laser components for the company TRUMPF. The machine assembly groups are optimized for a dynamic, highly precise and flexible machining of large elements. The one-part machine base and column made of composite material is constructed inherently rigid, with optimal vibration-reduction and heat-resistance. The work unit with a newly designed fork-type milling head and high-capacity motor spindle is suitable for aluminum as well as steel cutting. The tool changing process is carried out by a robot (equipped with double-gripper). Up to 339 tool slots are available in the tool arena. The travelling CNC-rotary table is equipped with a zero-point clamping system for the holding of clamping pallets. An automatic pallet changer is designed for unmanned machining and is able to memorize/store up to 4 (5) pallets with raw parts in its system.

This machine was designed for the machining of HGV brake calipers with a clamping system. Various work piece varieties can be machined on the same clamping device since the clamping points are identically arranged for all work piece varieties.

For complex machining the machine was equipped with a swivel bridge (A-axis), which is driven by Ø 500 mm torque-motors on both sides. Two Ø 500 mm torque-motor driven swiveling tables (B-axis) are installed on the swivel bridge. All rotary axes are equipped with hydraulic clamping units. The two work units can travel totally independent allowing adjustment options for tool lengths and tool diameters in all three axes. This machine is also equipped with a 80-slot pick-up tool magazine. This magazine is capable of holding a number of large drill- and milling heads.

This machine was mainly designed for multi-spindle machining, horizontal drill- and milling of heavy cylinders. In order to allow the machining of other work pieces, the first unit was designed as dynamic box-in-box unit. This box-in-box unit features an increasing X-traverse path and a higher-capacity work spindle.

The three-part machine frame of the box-in-box unit and the two-part machine base were made of a vibration-reducing composite-material construction. The 2500 mm large CNC-rotary table was designed for extra heavy work pieces with a weight up to max. 45 tons. With this rotary table any angle with an accuracy of ± 3 angular seconds can be positioned.

The use of manually adjustable, automatic exchangeable two-spindle drill heads in both units allows a considerable reduction of machining time. Two automatic tool magazines are additionally able to hold further drill- and milling tools.
