It was indeed the coupling, as suggested, that had come apart. Ordered the McMaster Carr part number and it has been working fine ever since.

Thanks all for the advice, I'll report on the results.
I tried adding oil to the gearbox, but it didn't take much and didn't stop the warnings.
Anyone had experience with this? Do I need a new pump?
