Lol, that's not the most scientific answer. I'm guessing it's the low voltage that limits the torque on an electric motor. I will have to do some research on that.

Ok that looks like it will be a deal breaker. Oh well.
So what kills the torque? Is is the voltage? So I should look for a motor with a higher max voltage?
I think there are a few models there that max out at 20-40 volts. Yes, a VFD won't work unfortunately.
The challenge would be to get Mach 3 to talk to the controller for accurate positioning,...
Has anyone considered using an RC boat motor as a spindle motor replacement for the X2?

As far as I can see they are cheap, come in 3...
What sort of bearings did you use on the grinder shaft?
Inspiring work! Keep the posts coming.
Here's a 2D sketch of the original shape (left) and the proposed straight edge (right). I will probably end up keeping one of the sections whole and cutting the other one into 2 shorter sections to...
Well I gotta say I've been waiting a long time for that update :) Sounds like your build came together pretty well. Some photos of it in action would be awesome!
Yes I would not be able to do 60 degree edges for dovetails. I think I'm going to have to do more like 35 degrees or thereabouts. The largest dovetails I have are only 15mm wide so I don't think...
So I was scratching my head thinking about how to make a poor man's precision straight edge. I live in Australia so I can't just go and buy a section of cast iron bar. They don't make that stuff...
Just got off the phone to Li at Ausino in Coburg. He can get me a 600x400x100mm plate (from China I'm guessing) which is "00" grade for $400. Apparently he has a new shipment due in a couple of...
Out of interest would you mind telling us how much for the plate and how much was shipping?
I'm looking into a surface plate as well to scrape the ways on my mill. I wonder if a group of us could make an order from this company to save on shipping? Would it be worth it?
Tonight I put a DTI on the end of the ballscrew and I measured about 0.025mm of backlash while rotating the screw back and forth. No matter how much I tighten or loosen the screws and nuts securing...
The couplings I am using aren't spiral couplings they are these ones:
277728
I believe they are curved jaw/spider couplings. From what I am reading they should be fairly good in this...
Well it's been a while but I have replaced the double row bearings with single row ones tensioned against each other. They are 7201B chinese bearings and are not a matched pair. I have made a...
Ok great advice thankyou. I assume that you put the 20-30kg of weight on the inner race while the bearing is horizontal and a dial indicator underneath.
I will run a test tomorrow and report...
I mean end play not run out sorry.
All fixings are pretty tight. I'm using 3201 (also 5201) double row angular contact bearings. I have stripped down and rebuilt a few times now and when I run a dial indicator on the end of the...
I am doing my own CNC conversion on the X2. So far I have used double row angular contact bearings on both the X and Y axes. The result has been ok but I want to fine tune the backlash as much as...
Yeah... I think I would have got my CNC conversion done in half the time for half the price if I was over there :) That could be a minor exaggeration though...
My local bearings place (Bendigo, Vic) will have to get them in from the US. I was hoping to find somewhere in Oz that has something on the shelf ready to go. I have tried Spareco Exports | RP...
Does anybody know where to buy v-belt for the belt drive upgrade for the X2 in Australia?? LMS site says it's a a Gates Truflex 0130. I think an equivalent might be 2L130. Any pointers would be...
Did you notice any improvement in cutting? What about noise, did that increase/decrease?
I don't think the X2 would come with radial bearings (if that's what you mean by regular). They should be angular contact, deep groove or tapered bearings. All of those need to be run with pre-load.
Interesting theory. However I would have thought that the tension on the bearings would easily be greater than the tension on the belt?? Not really sure how to test this other than loosening the...
I have the X and Y axes done for my mill (everything is mild steel, my own design). I would have to say that using the X2 as a manual mill is a frustration, but it can be done. I would also...
I made the bearing blocks for my cnc conversion on my X2 (big beefy column) in mild steel. I did this with a 50mm boring head that I got from CTC. I used a CCMT carbide insert (which I would say is...
I seem to have a similar problem when cutting circles (conventional milling) on my X2. I get chatter occurring at 45 degrees and 225 degrees though. Buggered if I know why. Not sure why motion in...
I think that women who work and enjoy working in engineering/machinist trades are probably outliers. Most women couldn't care less about what it takes to fabricate an object, they only care about...
