    Re: BT30 Spindle

If you use acid to remove the tap, make sure you don't have _any_ steel parts nearby, or they will rust. The fumes from this process make everything rust.

  2. Torque controlled drive - turn off all filters?

I'm getting ready to wire up my KFlop/KAnalog to my DMM Dyn3 drives for a 3-axis mill. My intention is to run the drives in torque control, as everything I've read says that is the best, highest...

  4. Timing pulleys - aluminum or steel / iron?

What are folk's thoughts on pulley material choice for positioning duties on a milling machine? My machine is a slightly bigger than RF45 bedmill, with 0.75 kW servos. Steel would seem...

    Re: DYN3 lost phase fault

DMM tech support answered this question for me. It's a bit embarrassing, as an engineer, as I should have noted the servos name plate power is 200 V. DC machines tend to have a linear relationship...

    DYN3 lost phase fault

I was bench testing my DYN3s and 750W DST servos last night with the drive tuning software. Servos on the bench, no load. Power was with only 120 V, as I wasn't in my shop near 240 outlets. When...

    Need a braking resistor?

I'm building a CNC system for a RF45 clone (Opti BF 46). About a year ago, I bought a 3 axis system from DMM; Dyn3 drives and 750 W DST servos. I'm finally finding time to start building the system....

    Dan:

The electrical schematic you attached, earlier, does match that of my machine. FYI - two of the limit switches you questioned are for a tapping mode, where in the spindle automatically...

    Re: Opti BF46 Build

It's been almost 8 months since my last update, and unfortunately, I don't have much to report on the subject of the CNC conversion. About the only progress I made was to get my glass scales and DRO...

Re: Picking an AC drive for an existing motor

    Hey Dan,

Yes, I am building my mill with a KFLOP and KANALOG. I've made little progress on the CNC side, as I poured all my time and efforts into building a proper shop to house everything. ...

Re: Picking an AC drive for an existing motor

Ahh, doing that in motored operation makes much more sense! You can see where I was confused, thinking about doing it under power.

Re: Picking an AC drive for an existing motor

Thanks Al. I don't have any differential probes, so my scope common reference will basically be a short to ground through those 1k resistors and the scope's ground traces. At the name plate 230 V,...

Re: Picking an AC drive for an existing motor

I have a good 4 channel scope. If I record the signal on one or all three legs, can that be used to tell AC vs BLDC, and/or pole count? That would be quite an easy measurement for me to get.

  15. Re: Optimum BF46 CNC conversion with Kflop and Teknic servos.

    Hi Harish,

I'm working towards a CNC conversion on a BF46 too, and have a few questions for you.

Picking an AC drive for an existing motor

I have a bed mill that I'm doing a CNC conversion on. The mill came with a 3 hp spindle motor and a built in drive. The drive is a proprietary unit, and the manufacturer won't provide any details...
  17. Re: Squaring up a benchtop bedmill...what is good enough?

10 thou per inch?! That would flat out piss me off. I hope you get her straightened out.

I think I'll just leave my machine alone for now, then, and see how stable it stays after making some...
  18. Squaring up a benchtop bedmill...what is good enough?

It is obviously a very subjective question, and I'll hear opinions ranging from perfect to don't expect better than 0.001 in/in. I've done some searching and haven't seen much discussion on what is...

It has been some time since I've updated my build thread, and progress has been slow. I was able to get the mill stand fabricated, and after all the welding, I put it on a big horizontal mill and...
  20. Re: just bought $500 chinese/taiwanese TSK160 tilting rotary table!!

I have the same table and agree, the tilt does move too fast. So fast, it makes the handwheel stiff. When I get around to putting steppers or servos on mine, the tilting axis will definitely get a...
  21. Re: Help me pick a button insert for aluminum

One other question - can you use different relief angle inserts in the same tool? I've found some 7° inserts that are non-ferrous rated (RCxT). I'm guessing no, but haven't found the answer with...
  22. Help me pick a button insert for aluminum

Apparently I didn't do enough research before buying my first shell mill and arbor. I naively assumed you could easily find inserts in any given shape for aluminum and separate inserts for steel. ...

Re: get tormachs $2100 4th axis for $700

If need be, if I had a cart next to the mill at about table height, I could muscle it on. I don't have any problems with my 6" machine vice, and this is only 30% more :)

    Realistically, I'll...

Re: get tormachs $2100 4th axis for $700
