For a simple circuit like this, it may be advantageous to go with
a single sided layout, so it can be done at home via toner transfer
or on pcb mill.

I actually thought about the tile cutter while looking for a easy, ready-made Y-axis,
for a small CNC with a small span for PCB and other small engraving.

I came across another sensor which people seem to have used
successfully - US5881LUA-ND and the SMT version costs $0.41 from Future!!

The datasheet says it is a low magnetic sensitivity unipolar...

Here's a version with increased isolation.
The LED resistors values should be good for 5V and 24V respectively.
If using a different motor supply voltage, adjust the resistor accordingly.

For anyone in India following this thread, Rhydolabz has
the MH183 unipolar hall effect sensor for a decent price.

It appears to be similar to the Honeywell SS441 and has the same pinout too.
