You don't need much power usually under 200oz will be plenty, the machine only moves at about 3.5mm a second unless you really kick the heat up but then you will burn out any square corners....
What speed, voltage, type wire....are you using?
I got it to 47" long but it is not 8" tall, hope it helps
Have you tried McMaster Carr? I use their 5/8" ball screw...

I'm using a .015" 7 strand SS wire 55" long 26 volts DC and had never had it turn black, it usually snaps after a few months..
