MikeT,
Did you use the "Plane" bearings that they called out or did you use real recirculating ball bearing rails and slides (THK, NSK, etc)? They used to advocate another brand, now they advise...

MikeT,

Asking what Txfatboy just did, only different..
Is the need for an auto height torch as great when cutting above a water table?
Is an auto height torch needed at all when cutting below water?

>"using the max speed on the hf mini mill."
Use a much slower spindle speed for AL, you have to form a chip that will eject, not a dust that will clog and "gal".
Cutting fluid is also a must...
There is a good source of simple plans that would fit your needs.
Some say the author is a bit Cranky.
I bet a search for "cranky" would put you on his path.
The plans arn't up to the standards...
Laser engraving is the way to go for anodized aluminum. You should be able to find a local sign shop that can do the work cheep if you give them a dxf of your layout. Or if you have deep pockets...
Please tell us about the conversion.
How did you do the Z quill drive?
Did you use a plan set or your own design?
Stock lead screws or upgrades?
What size servos and what gear ratio?
I have had both boards. The Fet3 is slow and requires ballest resistors. The Zylotex is fast and chopping. With equal voltage and steppers I would expect to see a near 2x performance improvement...
I forgot to adx your question of market potential. No one will buy one if you’re just a kid who makes a single machine as a college project. If you make is come in different colours and have Ron...
Joe,
You’re asking the million dollar question, and the answer is that there is no one answer. If you look at what is currently on the market for hobbyist CNC mills and routers there is a vast...
Regarding this MultiPlaz cutter;
Does anyone have any information on its ignition system?
Spark gap ignition as found on older plasma cutters can fry CNC electronics.
It is a necessity for a...
InventIt says:
"1/2" 10tpi acme, about 4' Works good."
What RPM are you spinning this at? Any sign of shaft whip?
TT
The plasma stream can only ignite when it is arcing to a conductive material.
I took a bit of a sabbatical from power supplies while building up my mill. Now it’s time to finish the control box. I am using 32v 10Amp servos with geckos.
The geckos say not to exceed 5...
In the Gecko 320 data sheet it says that the power supply voltage should not be greater than 5V above the servos rated voltage.
Does the 320 dissipate the extra 5v or does it’s chopping nature...
Both are great apps, SolidWorks is better (IMHO) for mechanical design and can be picked up quicker. Rhino is better for artistic endeavors. I started in SW and am trying to teach myself Rhino now....
You need to consider the diameter of the pinion. A 1” diameter pinion will travel 3.14 inches per rotation. So if you want 100IPM you have to have an output of ~32 RPM. If your motors output...
What material are these liberty cnc router tables made from?
The cutting deck looks to be MFD. What is the red material?
What sort of linear rails does it have?

Thanks for the info everyone. I was afraid you were going to say exactly what you have.
I imagine the efficiency of 1 pitch screws is a lot lower than a higher pitch. Maybe I'll investigate ball...
I did a search for any discussions related to shaft whip and came up with little.
What max RPM can one reasonably spin a 5’ 1/2" ACME threaded rod without developing any shaft whip or resonance?

How big will the machine be?
What style of machine? Gantry?
What will the framing look like? Long open streches or frequent supports?
What type of welding?
Stick burns through thin metal,...
Sure you can. If you don't care about tolerances almost anything goes!
MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is a great building material for your first machine. $22 for a 4'x8' sheet at Home Depot....

I built my first mill from the Phoenix plans. Great learning experience!

I think that the Axxus uses gecko drives, so yes, it probably can be set up for servos.
Or, you could buy the Axxus break out board, geckos, and a power supply to make you own.
The X and Y should...
Probably the best solution when we get this big is to go with rack and pinion drive. There would no longer be a “shaft whip” issue and the pinions can be coupled across the table by a rod. I want...
Oops, not photoshopped, the poster just has a rip out of it.
I’m most curious about what was on the wall in the background that Paul photoshopped over?
Darn nice plane, I often dream of taking up flying again, but never the time or money any longer... nor...
Now that is a great bit of information Gerry.
It's almost as if they had this configuration in mind..

Considering quadriture encoders further, the drift would be event less than this, The phase shift, and the rise and fall of the pulse would allow only .0001” drift!
Tim T.
I think we are on a similar track. I am intending on using two servos /w encoders and each servo having it’s own gecko drive. I will take the step and direction lines from my break out board for...
I am designing my second cnc router with a 60” wide gantry. I am using screw drive and feel that I need two screws to maintain proper alignment. I have seen machines on the net with two screws...
