Just a quick update: Since I already have shop air I've decided to buy a mist coolant set-up and install this before trying again. It's very little money and from what I've read it could make a huge...
I'm not sure "random" is an entirely fair description of what I had in mind. But I could cut a series of parallel slots gradually increasing DoC and chip-load, and see which comes out the least...
Thinking about it, I might design a test object in FreeCAD that only consists of a number of parallel slots, each performed with a different combination of DoC, feed & spindle speeds. That would...
Thanks guys! Unfortunately I don't have any money to spend on cooling or tooling, though I have been dreaming about building a flood cooling system some day. I imagine waterproofing the entire box...
Thanks @jaguar36, I was going to cut no more than the tool's width, or in this case 4mm. Is there any benefit in making the cuts wider? Going to try the painter's tape and superglue, and will pre-cut...
Hi all,
I know this has been discussed many times, and I have perused many related threads here and elsewhere, but my first attempt at cutting aluminium sheet on my OmioCNC X4-800L (800W spindle)...
Thanks! I've spent the whole afternoon applying liberal amounts of a basic lithium grease (the grey type, not white) with a small paintbrush to any and all parts which may suffer corrosion, carefully...
I just realised an accordion style way cover cannot be fitted to my machine, since the carriage travels all the way between the end brackets - there is no room for the bellows :(

And if I do use grease, which would be the better choice, a general purpose grey lithium grease applied with a brush or a white spray-on lithium grease? Bearing(!) in mind that corrosion protection...
The X and Y axes are reasonably well protected on this machine, but the Z-axis ballscrew and guides are exposed. If I do use grease to lubricate and protect these, what can I do to prevent chips and...
Hi all!
I'm relatively new to CNC; I bought an OmioCNC X4-800L a couple of years ago, hoping to use it for making front panels, PCBs, and little bits & pieces in my workshop. I never got round to...
Thanks guys - I'm not surprised to hear this; seemed too good to be true (especially the "adapters"). ATC will forever remain a dream of mine, even though I know it is firmly out of reach (like so...
Have you seen the Spindtech ATC-800? It's the only ATC spindle I've seen with a 65mm diameter, and it too uses the ISO10 tool holder. Would love to put one on my Omio X4-800L (mainly for PCB...
After doing some test cuts I noticed that the tank got pretty warm, maybe ~30C (I stupidly forgot to measure actual temp), which I hadn't expected. I left it to cool down a while, measured 24C, and...
This what I did for the coolant in the end:
354240

I took a piece of 100mm dia pvc pipe, cut it so it's just the right length to fit inside the keg, cut wide slits down the length...
Seemed to be ~£20 for 5L in Halfords.
Questionable compatibility w. aluminium.
Questionable galvanic properties.
Questionable toxicity.
Questionable environmental impact.

Thanks guys! Having looked at automotive coolants ("antifreeze") in my local Halfords and seen that the cost is not far off dedicated PC water cooling liquids, I decided to go for Mayhems' X1...
Thanks guys, some good suggestions there! I like the idea of a plastic "tool" for a dry run - just to see if I would crash into the spoil board or its fittings. Obviously this needs to be done...
Finally received the X4-800L today, and I'm happy to report that it arrived unscathed and seemingly well assembled! After checking the frame carefully for loose bolts, obvious misalignments, and...
This looks great, thanks for sharing your work! I'd like to know if (and how) this can be used with Mach3?
CamBam now runs on Linux as well - even on ARM architecture (e.g. Raspberry Pi): CamBam reference library - CamBam on Linux
:wee:
Edit: Scratch that, old news.

Or a PCB...
Thanks asniex, that looks pretty good! I will add it to my toolbox :) And yes, after dithering for a number of years, finally deciding to order the X4-800L did require an organ donation, of sorts;...
No worries there: firstly, the controller that comes with the X4-800L has a USB interface, secondly, the laptop I'm using (Thinkpad X60s) has a docking station which provides a parallel port.
Yeah, I had used FreeCAD before, a couple years ago, but settled on LibreCAD as a better (read: easier to use) 2D CAD alternative, which was my need at the time. I tend to do a lot of modelling in...
Just a quick note: I really think you should give FreeCAD a second chance, it's come a long way! Use the "daily" PPA. A lot of work is being done on the CAM side and while I haven't been able to try...
And the answer seems to be: FreeCAD. Which, as its name implies, is free. Rejoice.
Great to hear, thanks Roger! I have installed Mach3, and have optimised XP by turning off/removing a bunch of stuff - machine is now idling at 0% CPU / 120Mb RAM / 19 processes :) Having trouble...
While I'm waiting for the OmioCNC X4-800L I ordered last week (right in the middle of the Chinese New Year... of course) I've been busying myself with getting everything ready for its arrival. I've...
