I wonder why they connected dir X to both pins 14 and 17?
Thanks Guys.. John in particular that's very helpful, thanks. Nothing there that can't be fixed easily, so all in all a good buy at under £10.00 :)
Hello everyone,
Just a quick question, has anyone had experience of this cheap breakout board please?

That's me all over... always getting into a mess :P
I can appreciate the shielding, so motor noise doesn't get recieved by the encoder cables, but to be honest I can't see a lot of difference...
I've been looking for a special type of cable that combines both power and screened data cables. I'm going to be using several Electrocraft E240 servos on my next project and would like to minimise...
I've just been given an old Renishaw MP3 probe, complete with a 50 and a 100mm ruby tipped probe, unfortunately it had been sitting under someones workbench for the last 15 years and is a little the...
Hi Chaps, I'm expecting this thread to be a long one, as I'm a complete muppet when it comes to servos, so please go easy on me :)
I've just managed to get a good deal on several of these small...
Bloody horrible stuff, it's banned in any military application because of tin whiskers. Though now all the standard components are pre-tinned with the stuff we're buggered.
Am I right in my understanding that it doesn't matter if the supply voltage exceeds the maximum servo motor voltage, as long as it's under the 80V Gecko maximum as the G320/G340/G380 act like a...
A quick test for AC on a supposedly DC supply can be, connect another transformer primary across the DC output and measure the AC voltage on the second secondary winding while under load.

You can use a variac as you've found, as long as it can supply a high enough current without glowing in the dark, but for the sake of safety use a 1:1 wind mains isolation transformer as well.
You could always try a 3 channel quadrature encoder, the third channel is the index pulse and I think Mach3 can use it for showing RPM.
They can... but that would take like forever. Laser scanning heads do it with spinning mirrors and focused lenses.
How much higher is the unregulated supply voltage over the regulated, because the higher the excess voltage the more energy has to be dissipated by the regulator. A TO220 style case can sink about...
Spit on your finger and touch the chip, it's too hot if it sizzles, so sink it. :)
At initial turn on of a high current toroidal power supply, the magnetic flux within the coils has not yet stabalised and the large discharged smoothing caps need to be charged. They charge so...
From experience and only for "series" config, you can go up to 25x V nominal as long as the motors dont go above their usual operating temp (heat kills magnitism so permanent damage to your motors...
Complete G-Code reference from the people that had a bit of a hand in designing it. NIST...
Got it, thanks Darek. I'm an ex-army radio telecoms tech but came out 25 years ago and have been a computer engineer, off and on ever since, but trying to get the little grey cells back into...
Thanks Arvid and Darek, you're both right by the way. Pin 20 is connected directly to pins 18 - 25 and the plug shield casing in my printer cable so I'll be doing the same in my breakout board with...

My Compaq Evo N600c laptop has some of it's parallel port pins @ 5.0v some @ 3.3v and the rest are grounded @ 0v. The question is will it do any damage to my parallel port by using pullup resistors...
Do I need to worry about propagation delay in this instance, as it would be a constant and not have any effect on the motors performance unless the delay became longer than the step rate. I dont...
That's more like it, though I thought opto's were rated in MHz not Khz range.
Thanks Hillbilly, gives me a good starting point to work from.
Didn't look too promising, I'm in need of a little more detail really, thanks for trying though.
Any electronic designer types here that can point me in the right direction for information to do with using opto-isolators with a parallel port, specifically for Mach1 and 2 software.
I'm trying...
I found this and thought it might be of use to you but I'm not sure if it can be left plugged into the driver board at the same time as the cumputer, you'll have to ask Mariss.
Hi Andrew
Thanks for that. I've read all the Gecko files and most of the posts on this board too. I must say it's been a blast getting the little grey cells working again.
I've not done any...
Sounds like you'll have to set to with an AVO meter and find out which pair of wires join to which coil, sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
This is a better, more informative one.
