sorry... double post
One area I've not seen addressed in this thread is operation device operation on three phase power. The spindle is rated at 220v. Since 120/208 3 phase is 208 v (line to line), can a person run a...
I live off the grid and availablity of power to run my shop is tightly constrained. I do have a Cummins/Onan 9 kw diesel generator set.... three phase. It's a 12 wire unit and I could wire it single...
Thanks guys!
Don't know why this was being so complicated for me! A voltage between 3 and 20 times the steppers rated voltage is acceptable according to the stepper white paper at Geckodrive.com...
Can anybody offer me some advice on building a straight 24 volt DC motion control system?
I think the key issue is a stepper or servo that will operate on 24 VDC. Ideally something in the 4-600...
Try to turn the output shaft on the stepper or servo motor. It should be "locked up" and it will resist by turning back against your effort to turn it. That's what my servo machine does.... it sorta...
Or.... If using Mach 2 or 3, and "PC 2 Route" breakout board, one can use proximity switches... one per axis.
Check out Bob Campbell's website:

"In your design add a bottom pan that is elevated about 3/4" up and is removable."
AW HECK, Mike!!!
Why didn't I think of that?? BRAIN FADE!! Great suggestion!!!

Depends on what you call low cost. Try this link for really well built rackmount cases:

Realistic???? ..... OH YEAH!!!
I was a Maintenance "Line Chief" on B52s for many years at Castle
AFB in California and the first flight video is uncanny in look and sound. It really does...
Nice shop too!!!

You guys are GOOD!!
Looks like I have plenty of performance potential here... I ever get the damn thing to run wel!!!
Spent the last 2 months trying to get the darn thing it to run reliably ...
Thanks!!!
If I get only 25% efficiency I still have almost 300 lbs of force. Seems like there is a room to trade off for speed!
With that much force, surely I can break something!!! At 400 ipm...
Hi kids!!
If I am using an 600 in./oz. servo (Ametek) motor connected to a .75" dia. x.5 tpi leadscrew, I theoretically get a torque multiplication of 5x right?
Since I have 1000 RPM available...
What if I am using a interface board with a built in 5vdc and 12vdc power supplies (like a Sound Logic, PC 2 Route board)? What'sa resistor do?
Thanks Kong!
Mike
Thanks Joe! Just a bit under $5000 including RhinoCam and Mach 2.
Since this post I am having problems getting it to run reliably and it all seems to be centered on the the power supply. I am...
After more than 2 years sometimes very slow effort, it is finally alive. More to follow, but it is a 24x36 Bob Campbell designed unit and it has a Servo electronics unit by Dan at Camtronics.

Any one using on of these remote controllers. Whaddya think?? Off the shelf alternatives ?
thanks

Bingo, CRFultz!!!
Won't fit my Porter Cable laminate trimmer but will fit my variable speed Makita!!!
For now I can dial back my feed speeds and get busy cutting. Was hoping to use the 40K rpm...
Oops!!!
The shank diameter is .125" and the cutter itself is .025".
A .125" collet for a Porter Cable model 7310 is a more accurate description.
Looks like I had a "short between the...
Hi Kids!!
Looking for precision collets for a Porter Cable 7310 laminate trimmer t othe speed up for cutting with .025" diameter cutters. Desire less than .001" or so.
Anyone got any sources? ...
After many months of building. I'm now doing power up testing to see if the Darn thing will work!
I have been messing with Rhino3D and have some interesting parts modeled and have even developed...
Hey DareBee
What about saving toolpaths and tooling data for frequently repeated parts? In the full version of VM, a kBase file can be created to save this data. What aboout VM basic?
I love...
That is what I have done.
A bit at a time.
I started with the frame and moving table, then the slides, then the screws and z axis carriage, then servos and power supply, finally the massive...
Excellent support!!! Two thumbs up. Premade parts are very reasonable. In fact your better get a really good deal on the raw stock before thinking of making your own. Nicely machined parts. It's...
Yes. 20 mm LGH HiWins on x and y, 15mm THKs on Z.
Will get you the actual part numbers. Must clean up the spreadsheet and post it soon. I have complete cost figures.

Too many projects too little time.
Got most all of the machining on the mechanism complete.
Rails and screws are complete and installed.
Built a stand to mount the machine on.

Looking good!!! I'm hearing good feedback from people with real time experience. Confirms my preconceptions as a maintenance guy... Nothing beats good maintenance.
