Hi everyone,
I'm considering purchasing the plans and just had a few questions. These are probably already answered in the official forum but I thought I'd ask here before I commit…
1- Has...
Ah yes... that might be a problem for me!!!
Good luck! ;)
EmmKay...
For every person who posts, there are probably hundreds more who just come to look.
Threads never die around here!:)
I'm interested in your tile cutting project as I work in...
You are CRAZY man. I mean this in a good way. Hot Glue? Drop cloth? I never would have thought of using such materials...
You mentioned the viscosity is still higher than you'd like while heating....
My thoughts exactly.
I would have the gantry traverse the shorter distance, unless you absolutely need wide access to the table...

This just might do the trick...

look at the product labeled "TANGENTIAL CUTTER FOR LABEL MAKING / $ 648".-
Seems like its better suited for...
Have you tried using a drag knife setup? Something with a sharp balde and a swivel that allows the knife to turn as the direction changes. A few people have made them on this site. Do a search.

If I understand correctly, you are thinking of using standard threaded rod to move your axis, and you're wondering if you'll be able to get .002 accuracy out of it.
I highly doubt it. For one...
Do you have a link? When you say "Screw Mechanism" I think of about 100,000 different kinds.

Nice start.
I like your chice of Steel as it won't flex easily.
Just make sure you get everything squared as you start to assemble...

Hey Metal Head
Thanks for sharing...

Do you know anyone with a potter's wheel?
You could turn this on a wheel using some clay and a template of a quarter circle to create a hemisphere. The template will need some sort of jig to hold...
I know many programs that have FEA (finite element analysis) plugins. They can test stress in structures based on loads. Solidworks' plugin for this is called cosmoworks.
Not sure about your...
Nice Todd,
May I ask how you modeled that (and what program you used)?
Carlo
Not a bad idea LOL.
Actually, cooling the wax before machining may help if it proves too sticky/gummy at room temperatures.
I hadn't even thought that far ahead
I gues that opens a whole new ball of wax (pardon the pun).
The aproach may very well be to work backwards. Find a wax that doesn't expand too much...
Hu,
Good idea about pressing, except you will end up with air pockets. Ok for proofing a program, but not for taking an impression.
I'm in a similar boat to Charper. I will be melting the wax...
Harlow,
I had asked about doing it in several layers, and can't remember the reasoning against it. Perhaps it was that there can be memory between the layers (leading to delamination).
As for...
I miss it. I used to watch the screen savers during dinner and actually felt I was learning something. But then my cable supplier deleted the channel...

Just to chime in here,
I spoke with Freeman supply recently and the guy suggetsed for thicker castings (>1") I make a bok out of aluminum plate. The plate should be relatively thick, so as to hold...
Congratulations!
I bet you can't wait... Baby steps, baby steps...

Geof,
Don't you mean Engineers from UBC would dangle a VW Bug from the Lion's Gate?
Do they still do that?
Carlo
(missing Vancouver, but coming back for Christmas baby! )
Thanks for clearing that up, Ger
And thanks for the heads up when I start dealing with wood!:)

I would consider the rigidity of the machine. Under no load, they may all be accurate. But what happens when they encounter a load? How much will the gantry deflect when the Z is extended?
While I...
Hey everyone,
I'm experimenting with cutting pink and blue styrofoam from the local hardware store. The pink is more open in structure, is harder than the blue and seems to give more consistent...
Thanks.
I wasn't able to find the video you reffered to on the imts site.
However I did find out it is called an Aegis Hyposurface. It contains almost 900 linear actuators!

nervis1,
cool video. I hope to get out there one of these years.
One question:
At the very beginning of the video, there is what seems like a wall that is somehow mechanized. It looks like...
;)
That does look more or less like what I've used, only the stuff I use comes in 3/4, 1, 1.5 2, and I believe 3 inch thicknesses. 2x10 ft sheets. Its sold as insulation I think.
I just looked at...
