  1. Re: Mark's EPOXY Granite 18"x20"x20" (700mmx780mmx780mm) vertical mill build

Have a look at your attitude 'wizard'. Mark is sharing his build with us, posting photos and inspiring others. Your post is not helping the project in any way. Perhaps you can link to some of your...

Re: Large Epoxy Granite Vertical CNC Mill

Health Effects from Overexposure to Epoxy

Some epoxies can take days or even weeks to fully harden. So it's good to err on the side of caution and wear protection when sanding this stuff after...

Re: Large Epoxy Granite Vertical CNC Mill

    Hi Petrus

Good to see you're keeping at it. Looks like you got the right gear to get the job done! Still asking myself though why you didn't cast in flat & pre-drilled metal bars as base for the...

    Re: Mazak VQC 15/40 Retrofit

    Hi Thomas,

Awesome build thread. Would love to see the mill with fresh paint, please keep the pics coming :)
Been looking at KFLOP, if it ends up working well for a machine this size, that would...

Very detailed design and neat execution, love it! :)
  6. Re: Mark's EPOXY Granite 18"x20"x20" (700mmx780mmx780mm) vertical mill build

Not sure but on the photo it looks like the bottom left did not compact very well. Are there voids in the surface?

Great work Mark! Can't wait to see the de-molded result :)
  8. Re: Why is there so little going on in Epoxy Granite?

I would disagree that EG is inherently more suitable for smaller machines. The benefits and challenges do scale with size for all materials (eg it isn't 'easy' to cast a 5t Mehanite frame either).
  9. Re: Mark's EPOXY Granite 18"x20"x20" (700mmx780mmx780mm) vertical mill build

I believe EPUSELF is targeting small scale production without dedicated tools such as vibration tables or elaborate mixers. I have heard their solution has a higher epoxy percentage to make the...
  10. Re: Mark's EPOXY Granite 18"x20"x20" (700mmx780mmx780mm) vertical mill build

    Hi Mark,

Epuself is the only premix option that I am aware of

    Do-it-yourself Materials:

Their main business is manufacture of polymer concrete machine beds for third party vendors. If you...
  11. Re: How do you mix larger quantities of epoxy granite?

If you do it in multiple casts that cure separately then you get secondary bonds which are weaker and undesirable. You want one cohesive piece that is bonded on a molecular level; can only get it by...
  12. Re: How do you mix larger quantities of epoxy granite?

    Hey mate,

You'll need some kind of rotary mixer with a lot of torque. If you keep the epoxy content below 10% the mix will have a viscosity that is hard to mix. Perhaps try mixing it dry and...
  13. Re: Why is there so little going on in Epoxy Granite?

It seems so easy at first but in reality there is a lot more to it than just mixing pebbles, sand and epoxy to make an instant mill. E/G is not a solution to cut cost and get a cheaper mill. By the...
  14. Re: Mark's EPOXY Granite 18"x20"x20" (700mmx780mmx780mm) vertical mill build

Looks interesting. How will you align the two segments perpendicular?

Are the linear guides purposely ordered do did you happen to pick them up for a good price?

Re: Large Epoxy Granite Vertical CNC Mill

Weight is your friend. The more mass your mill has, the less it is affected by vibration and chatter. A heavy structure also helps if you want to drive your axis with powerful motors and achieve...

Re: Large Epoxy Granite Vertical CNC Mill

Hey mate, looks like an interesting project. I am not an engineer but here's some thoughts on the mill design.

    1) A wider base could be beneficial to mate with the base / stand and reduce...

Well, you may be in luck...

Boeing is closing a plant in Sydney and auctioning off equipment in the process. One bit of gear is a measuring device with 3m granite slab and air bearings.
