the driver needs to be set via dip switches to set the current, however its lowest setting is way above the needs of that motor and yes you can burn out the motor, melt the insulation fry that puppy...
Only thing I see is that your motors are .65 amp, and that driver goes only as low as 1.5amp, could possibly have to do with your heating issue.
Just a thought.

Hi, So in the end I got another frankie for my project, one that gained the wifes approval, go figure....
I ended up planing some faded maple I had laying around and discovered some really nice...
I'm quite impressed, and not a little jealous, I'm still working with my home-built, half built machine.

Hi Kevin, I played with vectric's photo vcarve trial edition, but didnt think the results justified the price. So instead I use the free program, BMP Bender found on this forum to create stl files...
I have the sign laid out ready to cut, but havent gotten around to planing an 8x10 piece for it yet. I'd really like a bas relief sign just didnt expect to find one readily. Of course you can never...
Thanks again, Thats a real nice one, perhaps I'll save it for Halloween, but I think the first one had more flavor, I have it almost ready to cut, I think....

Thank you Jalessi, looks like a good starting point, I'll see what I can do with it.

John
Very nice, thank you
all you need to do is change the name to remove the .txt
John
your running 3 amp steppers at 4.2 amps, no wonder they get hot, cut it back to 3 amps, that should at least help with the heating(keep you from frying the motors).
John
oh, and cut the...

Sorry, I've had a busy couple days. The resistor looks fine, no signs of burning or overheat. The chips are SLA7078MR s.
All my J4 jumpers are in place, I've never used the current reduction...
I dont know if this will help, how accurate it is, or if it will be any help.
But I found this in a post about modifying the board.
John
I dont have one of mine, but here is a close up from hcnc's webpage.
The problem axis is Y, so would that be R10?
John
Thanks, which one would that be?
John
The Y did feel weaker, and swapped it with the z and it followed the driver so I .ooked my y motor to my "a" driver and it appears to have fixed the problem for now.
Guess I need to start thinking...
Hi, Not knowing what control software your using, I had a similar issue with carving a car model and considered using mach3's "z inhibit" function to do it in successively deeper passes.
Just a...
Hi,
I built my diycnc using a 4 axis hobbycnc pro chopper board. I have only been using 3 of the axis, so far and lately I've had problems losing position on the y axis, checked everything...
velocity as set in motor tuning is the maximum the motor will be run, you cant override that via feedrate
John
Spent some more time with the machine today, since the lables on the new drive are in english I was able to ascertain that the drivers are set to run the steppers at 2.5 amps not the 4 amps I...
