Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

Picked out a few over the last year, in the attached list below.

Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

The Kickstarter just ended a few minutes ago. 28 days,

116 backers pledged $187,974 to help bring this project to life.

So of those, there are 40 full SwissMak Mill-Turn centers to build, and...

Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

Hey thanks to everyone who's been supportive so far! It's at $160,079 right now, 14 hours left. Hopefully there isn't a huge wave of people pulling out because of nervousness.

    skrubol,

    I...

Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

    Hey oxomoxo,

The link below is to the original thread from 2015. It started out more as a hobby toy curiosity thing just to see if I could make anything useful with it. I actually have a lot more...

Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

Yeah, for me the disappointing part is seeing people who refuse to believe it can cut metal even after watching the video. The video clearly shows it cutting delrin, 2 aluminum alloys, brass, and...

Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

    Travis,

Since this is a sliding headstock machine, the tailstock must follow at a constant distance when a part is between centers (or gripped by the subspindle and main spindle at the same time)....

Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

Yeah even with 30 taper machines running mass production (Speedios, Robodrills) people are advised not to take really heavy cuts, but rather take faster, lighter ones. I know Frank Mari at Maritool...

Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

The_chip_troll, the leadscrew on the production machine will be coated with either DLC or WS2 for a coefficient of friction below 0.1. The long nut increases load capacity, rigidity, and slows the...

Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

skrubol, the boxways and leadscrew nuts on this machine don't need grease or oil at all. They run fine completely dry. Metal on metal contact needs lubrication but slippery plastics like acetal work...

Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

Yeah within the hobbyist DIY CNC builders, everyone uses cheap ballscrews and cheap linear rails. If I were building a cheap router to cut plywood, I would definitely go with these. They have almost...

Re: 7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

Doesn't come with a stand, it just sits on any big table or desk. A stand won't actually provide any rigidity unless it's a part of the machine structure. As shown in this thread, I just set the...

To address the last few comments...

That pricing for Dura-bar seems outrageous. The shipping would probably bring it to ~700 dollars. Just for the machine base! I spent just over 200 dollars for...

In my last post I attached a GIF of it cutting cast iron, although I don't know the exact grade (it wasn't a soft grade though). That was just over 25 inches per minute, axial depth of cut...

    7 Axis Swiss Mill-Turn (DIY)

    Sherline lathe chuck grip problem

    Hi everyone,

This is my first post on these forums but I've been creeping on you guys for several years. I have a decent amount of machining experience, more so with CNC than manual machines.
