Don't let the bit bottom out, always pull it out some before you tighten the collet. This will give the collet room to draw the tool back as it tightens all the way.

Check your headstock bolts for tightness. Is this .005 in diameter or radius? Is it really cold room temp when the machine is not running?

Here are the steps I use to hold hex material centered in a 3 jaw chuck with soft jaws.

1: Install jaws with enough sticking past the OD of chuck for cleanup.

2: Clamp on a suitable size chuck...

I also had pullout problems with collets (TG 100). I had good performance with a short endmill holder with set screw on the weldon flat.
