^^^^^^You make a good point, and considering its rarity due to obsolescence, it's probably the *best* move. I thought it might be a good exercise if I could do it w/ my own tooling, but I'm not sure...
Thanks dude.
One more thing; I just did some quick math using the O.D. of the piston (2.2419) and using the .001 constant, it gives me .0022 That won't be too sloppy will it? Sounds big, but it's just going...
Thanks Endo, I'm using a forged Wiseco. Not so many choices out there anymore, but I'm not one of those guys who poo-poos Wiseco anyway; I've had good luck w/ them so far.
I dunno who i could borrow...
Bottom end is brand spankin'. I pressed it last fall w/ a '95 YZ125 con-rod. There are no more OEM available and the mid '90s YZ was as close as I could get. The only differences in dimension are...
OK............those are pretty risky w/ a ported cylinder. Many 2 stroke engine builders swear them off due to the risk of catching a port. From what I understand the flex hones are the way to go to...
Umm, I thought flex hones and ball hones were the same? Flex Hone is the brand name of the actual tool I have.
Is there something different by a similar name you have in mind?
Ah, I thought you were casually referring to case-reed motors in contrast to the piston port, etc.
I can understand the tight specs for the later machines where pretty much everything is aluminum...
At the risk of getting way off topic, could you elaborate on the heat growth vs cooling shrinkage confusion? I'm unclear as to what you're getting at.
Also, I'm curious as to why the cooling...
I think the finest feed on my mill is .001 To be honest I haven't messed w/ the feature much, nor do I have much formal instruction. I was just going to use the most appropo cutter speed formula and...
Thanks Hobie, but wouldn't the hone take a different amount off of the worn cylinder as it sits, as opposed to one with the finish from the bore-job? I would think the hone would tear through the...
I would expect the aluminum piston to expand more than the iron sleeve. Even the liquid-cooled bikes use .0015 as a min.
FWIW, the max I.D. of the bore is currently 2.2069, the O.D. of the new piston is 2.2419, and the target bore size is 2.2434 min. to 2.2439 max.
I'm astonished that Yamaha is specifying a...
I'm going to try boring an iron-sleeved cylinder on an old 125cc dirt bike - I've never done this before. I intend to put it on my mill and use a boring head and then finish it with a silicon carbide...
Huh. They can certainly disappear if you don't keep a close eye on them. I didn't know if there was a use for them I didn't know about assuming you were wearing them out.
I'd often have to fill...
How do go through so many? I have one that's nearly 10 years old......awfully beat-up, but nearly 10 ten years old.
At the risk of looking like I'm trying to separate the flyspecks from the pepper, is there a reason you favor the CCMT over a 55 degree diamond or even a triangular-shaped insert?
I imagine it may...
Awesome.
Thanks guys!
I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar w/ what you mentioned - sandviks / small ccmt series.
Would you elaborate or perhaps provide a link? The swapping of inserts is attractive to me too.

Well that's pretty much what I was thinking too, but I'm aghast at how much I've learned from this site so far, so I didn't want to discount the prospect that I was missing something.
Thanks for...
This may be a silly question, but I'm curious if there is a reason NOT to use an indexable BB in a boring head on a mill. As I look through a couple of catalogs, I don't see an indexable BB...
For What it's worth (I see this thread has sat unanswered for a while), I have been happy w/ Smithy as a company, but it should be noted that I haven't done a whole lot of dealing w/ them over the 10...
Thanks..........the Interapid is actually already on its way. I'll have to look up the Indicol mount, not familiar w/ those.
$136 through CDI, hmmm
Wow, the Mahr 801H looks like it would be pretty sweet for squaring the quill. That's the first one I've seen like that, but I'm admittedly ignorant of all but the most common models.
Thanks. I...
Hey thanks for the empirical advice. I've all but pulled the trigger on an Interapid 312b-2, but it sounds like I may be able to get away w/ something "cheaper". I was also planning on buying a real...
Thanks for the advice. I would've thought more folks have opinions on these things.
I'm currently leaning toward an Interapid (w/ swivelly shank). As I weave my way through a google search, it...
I did a search and couldn't come up w/ anything.........I'm looking at purchasing a test indicator, and am a bit confused on what may or may not be important.
The ones I have used so far...
Well, I compromised between using a sander and the mill......I mounted a 2.25" flap wheel in the quill and left the rod mounted to my rotary table. It's worked pretty well. I decided to use the flap...
I bought a 1220 LTD back in 2000, and it has been a fantastic lathe. The mill head wouldn't allow reasonable cutting w/out walking across the work. I used both locking features, etc. I ended up...
