Cool stuff, thanks.
I don't quite understand how to do the math to figure out how much more rigid one tool is than another. Say .5 em vs 1.0 ?
Why can't you blow a machine off with air? I hate stupid rules like that. I'm smart enough to run the machines and make parts, but not smart enough to properly blow off a machine?
I wish the USA had what you're talking about. I wish I had grown up someplace in Europe that could have got me into this trade a lot sooner.
I'm not familiar with any certifications and haven't worked with anyone that had one. Where do you go to get these certifications?
Certifications or titles or diplomas or whatever don't really...
Indicol indicator holder is pretty damn useful.
Quality taps.
Set of counter sinks and counter bores is nice to have.
Lixie brand deadblow hammer is a good thing to have for tapping the...
Seems to me that the tool maker title doesn't mean all that much now days. Machining is such a big field with so many specialties, it's impossible for one guy to be a "tool maker" in all fields.

I want to "skin" a 3d shape and then apply desired cut lines and then have solid works output the flat pattern shapes. IE Sailboat sails. Is this possible?
Thanks for your time

It can't remember what they call it, but they can sell a version of solidworks that doesn't allow you to build assemblies. That may be why it's $2500.
Surfcam also sells solidworks, if you're...
Best thing you can do is go for 3 flute instead of 2. Huge improvement.
Look into surfcam's truemill technology. Go insanely fast.
Yes, I tested it on my Haas and it works perfectly. Only thing I couldn't do was DNC a large file. Pop in the usb stick and it acts just like a floppy, no difference.
Interesting idea hu. That may very well work. Would be a pain break up a program and sub it out. I think I'd rather just Dnc off another computer.
Silly that we need to do any of this crap. ...
Try setting your sort type to none and gouge check to single. It's under the last tab.
I remember reading that too and it must be why I can't DNC the 4 meg file I just tested.
Still better than using retarded floppies. Way faster.

Got it installed today and to my surprise, it worked perfectly without ANY messing around. I loaded a program just like I would off a floppy, no problem. I also DNC'ed and it worked just like it...
Those rego-fix are so nice.
I've milled it with carbide before.
And of course plunged taps out.
Maybe around 800 RPM 5 to 10 ipm.
DOC, hard to say.
Not sure about a 6 inch hole saw. I guess maybe if your lathe goes slow enough and you have a good way to hold the saw.
Shouldn't be a problem to drill and then bore it out. It will just take a...
Looks perfect, thanks Hu!
Boss is ordering one today.

Does anyone know of something I could replace the floppy drive with so I'd have more memory potential. Optimally, I'd like to use a USB stick and then DNC off of that.
I know I can DNC from...
Thank you for your help, date and time is working great.
Where did you learn how to do this sort of thing? Some of these post edits seem rather simple once you know the language. Is there a...
Is there a way to automatically insert the date and time in the M post?
Thanks
John
Sure you can do that or pretty much whatever you can dream up as long as you've got plenty of time. You'll screw up a lot but that's how you learn.
The key thing about what you're doing is that...
Draw a center point and a line at x distance from center and then copy rotate the line 5 times at 60 deg. Trim it up.
Maybe there's a faster way but I don't think so.
I do it at home on my mac pro. It works fine other than the video card probably not being optimal. Dual booting is kind of a pain so I'm planning on getting a dedicated machine to run SW. You may...
What is the Quadro or ATI video cards going to get me? I think I've got a lower end Quadro in my machine at work and it doesn't seem to be anything special. Still chugs.
A guy at work says he's...
Here is what I'd like.
Dedicated machine for solidworks:
Stable
Allow for rotating large assemblies around with ease. No chug chug
Allow for reasonably fast high quality renderings.
They're cheapo lathes and you get what you pay for. It's not like they're unusable, but they're not something I'd buy if I had a choice.
If it's all you can afford than it will be better than...
