I think for the time being I'm going to jumper the encoder +5v pin to the err reset, and also decouple the logic and motor supply grounds. I don't love the idea of of having no feedback...

After thinking on this for a night, I think I will try driving a 5v relay with the err/res pin. Will report back.

yea if your taper is er16 then these adaptors will bring you down to er11... max shank size .25... hence my move to the Live Tool spindle with a bigger taper.
