I obviously don't understand schematics or something but when I look at the "schematic v4.0" I see this for the step settings
J1 J2
0 0 - 1/8 step (I assumed this meant no shunts)
0 1 - 1/4...
OK I think I found the problem. I was using a wizard that had mm or in. option and while I didn't pick either and neither was lit up it was defaulting to mm, so "1.000" was not what I thought it was...
This is primarily a Mach3 question but I am using Picstep4 with v2 firmware.
My machine:
200 step /rev bipolar motors
18 tpi screw
and I want to 1/4 step
First, Am I right in calculating...
I am having trouble setting up my picstep with Mach3.
My hope is to do 1/4 stepping. If I am using firmware v2 then I should have a shunt on J1 but NOT J2 ?
Thanks
John W.
My ultimate goal is to be able to carve 3D objects (2.5D really) that I model. Right now I really just want to see Mach3 cut something that I input. I chose an image file rather than a vector file...
It must not create it cause I just opened the file in Kcam and got the same amount of cutting path. Good to know it is a demo thing, I thought I was going crazy
Thanks,
john
I have just completed my homebuilt machine and have started trying to fool around with it in Mach3. I figured the easiest way to make it do something other than the roadrunner is to use an image...
Does anybody have any recommendations on heatsinks for the LMD chips? I have some small 5watt (I think) heatsinks on there now but once I have them under load I'm sure they will prove too small. ...
Forgive my ignorance but is an MKT capacitor the same thing as a "mono. ceramic"?
As you may guess I am not very electronics literate but it is facinating...
Thanks,
I am in the process of building my first PicStep and I have come across a problem I didn't anticipate. I can not for the life of me find a 1uF 100V MKT capacitor or at least not one that fits
I...
do the R2 and R4 resistor limit current to protect the motor or the LMD? I thought it was to protect the LMD but if thats the case why not set it at somewhere above 6.6k and leav it at that?

So far I have only one etched. I wanted to make one work before I spent a lot of time on the other two. I also etched a breakout board from pminmo. I attched a few pics below.
In looking at the...
OK I have the first board (PICStep V4) etched, tested for continuity and ready to drill. What size bits are people using for the various holes. The last (and only) boards I made called for a #60...
I apologize if this has already been covered but I am getting ready to build a PICStep v4 controller and just wanted to make sure I am not crazy (I'm new to this). For the transfer method of board...
I built the driver boards several months ago and tested them with these motors (but no load) and they worked fine at 12V once I got the speed settings right in Mach 3. At that time the heat sink got...
Too be honest I built the boards from the Book "CNC Robotics" so I'm not sure if it is limited. I'll apologize in advance for my electronic ignorance but what would that limit current limiter look...
I am running an L297/L298 driver board with 2 PC power supplies(24V) and using the Automation Direct motors (276 OZ-IN, NEMA 23, BIPOLAR, 2.8A/phase, 1.1ohm). I had been working with it for about 5...
Ok I understand which ground should be clipped relative to the diagram but which supply should I make the green one? Or are you saying that regardless of supply I put in the green position I run a...
Does it matter if the power supplies don't match? I have a 250watt AT style power supply and a 480watt Serial ATX style supply.
Can I join these together? Does it matter which one has its...
I am going to try my hand at building a power supply. This is really just a first try and is a little smaller than I would need to build for a 3 axis router. Its main purpose is to prove to myself...
OK I switched to Mach3 and played around with the motor tuning config and got the motor up to 37 IPM on the 12 V supply according to Mach3 but the moter is not on a machine so I have no good way of...
So I need a power supply that is in the 40V range. What does it need for amps 6+A based on the max for the L298 (3 axis X 2A) or 8.4+A based on the motors (3 X 2.8A). I guess what I'm asking is...
I'm sure this is the wrong forum for this question but in keeping with the theme of electronics and this thread can anyone suggest a good book or web site for the electronically challenged?
Thanks...
Like I said I am electronically ignorant. I guess I always assumed that the motors pulled a certain amount of current and you had to be careful not to exceed the capability of the drive
The only...
Thanks for the help everyone!
I will definitely try Mach3. The only reason I havn't used til now is that it seems very difficult to get proficient. It took me 20 minutes to figure out where to...
So it is starting to sound like the power supply is the culprit. Anyone know of a cheap power supply to test this theory with? I really haven't researched power supplies at all since I thought I...
I have tried full and half steps but it hasn't made much difference.
I'm not sure but this is the motor

I have finished building the driver boards and the x-axis and hooked it all up to see it go and it was slooooooooow. This is waht I have
