Re: 2000 Fadal 4020 Spindle Issues

Got the machine going again, so for the sake of closure and to maybe help anyone else who has this issue in the future, here is what I did:

I bought a Glentek spindle driver and replaced the...

Re: 2000 Fadal 4020 Spindle Issues

    Dunno.

I'm gonna pull, clean, and reseat all the cards in the card rack, and unplug/plug all the cable connections into the spindle drive, and then see what happens.

    Will probably check the DC...

Re: 2000 Fadal 4020 Spindle Issues

OK, so I got some time to work on the Fadal today, and here's what I've found:

The grounding is already as good as I can make it. It's grounded the same as my other VMC and it works just fine....

    2000 Fadal 4020 Spindle Issues

Back in Nov of '20 I bought a 2000 4020S and had it moved ~200mi to my shop.

It has the HT motor, 10k grease spindle, Baldor vector drive, AC servos, 30 tool servo turret, servo coolant, washdown...
  6. Re: Seeking Opinions and Experience on Older (Mid 90's) Matsuura VMC's

Yeah, that is a bummer that I was unaware of. I've heard good things about the Yasnac controls, so it never occurred to me that there'd be no way to keep one going. Hmmmm....

    I'm also looking at...
  7. Seeking Opinions and Experience on Older (Mid 90's) Matsuura VMC's

Specifically the RA-IIF (or RA2F, seen it both ways).

I'm looking at a couple of different machines, both are 1995 models, both look to be in pretty damned good shape for their ages, and both have...
  8. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

They might still show up, but they're a lot easier to skip like that, and the thread gets a lot shorter. Easier scrolling! lol

To hell with him. If he wants to cut air with a pointy stick and...
  9. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

Translation: I'm an old man who thinks he knows it all, and shall continue to do things the way I've always done them, in the face of all facts and evidence to the contrary.

    BTW, Mr Fapper, my...
  10. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

I forgot to set him to ignore. :tired:

Ian, climb milling does several things for you that conventional milling does not:

    1) Carbide tools (both indexables and ground solid) want to cut. ...
  11. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

    You're quite right.

I've put him on ignore so I won't be tempted further.
  12. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

    Too . . . Easy . . . Can't . . . Resist . . .

Mr. Kettle, I have a Mr. Pot on the line for you, he says "You're black."

Have a lot of machines with pre-loaded ballscrews and servo...
  13. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

Yeah, I'm out on this one.

Glad the OP produced something worth using, but this thread has long since devolved into an epic **** show.

You're on your own, HandleFapper. Enjoy applying your...
  14. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

Go for it. Your accent can't be any worse than those F1 drivers they're always putting on TV. At least you're trying. ;)

    Good luck with the knives.

Indeed. Hard to feel too bad for the...
  15. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

I think the big thing here is that a lot of people are getting into CNC because there is this total misconception out there that a CNC machine will let you become an expert metal worker without...
  16. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

Yeah, and reading his description makes it worse.

    This is just wrong.

A RH ground tool with up-cutting flutes turning clockwise will always start the cut at the bottom, regardless of how it...
  17. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

Setting the tool length offsets and setting the overall program Z offset or zero are two different things.

I too set all my tools off a known height probe position, but I still set my program zero...
  18. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

If you set your Z zero at the top surface of the work piece, then you can at a glance tell whether your tool is clear for a rapid move or whether it is in a cut.

If the Z level is positive, it's...
  19. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

I've been reading from the beginning, when I posted back on page six or seven.

Went to **** refers to all you guys spending the last two pages swapping parts deals in the middle of some guy's...
  20. Re: Show how to build a CNC machine from the very beginning to the end

Damn, this thread went to **** in a hurry. (nuts)

Hope the guy isn't dead or something.

Things have been getting mighty sporty in China recently (economically speaking), so he might be having...

This is the first time I've had commercial castings made.

Depending on how this project goes, I may do them more often.

It all depends on how this first one turns out.

That's what the foundry told me as well. Nobody casts their matchplates from a wooden master anymore, they're all machined from bar stock.

It's much cheaper, and less trouble too.

    That's how...

Company name is Rexite in STL.

The tech is early 1980's though, not cutting edge by any means, just a lot more modern than squeezers and wooden patterns on a mold board.

    That's 1930's...

No, that's actually a really good suggestion.

It would be useful if the foundry didn't need alum matchplates for their machines.

I talked it over with them and they said if I delivered to them...

As it turns out, the foundry must use a metal match plate, as all their molding is done by automatic machines.

    Thanks for the input though.

Yeah, I'm sure I want to print it VS cnc machining.

I own a VMC, and it would take the better part of a week to machine it, nevermind the hundreds of dollars of long reach tools I'd need to...
  27. Looking for someone to print a sand casting pattern for me.

This isn't a charity case, I'm happy to pay you to do it.

I need someone who can print a master pattern for me, solid enough that I can cast it in rubber/silicon to create a mold that I can use to...

If you go the tool changer route on the bigger machine, use a standard taper and a standard retention knob.

Makes it easier for everyone if the tooling is standard and easy to find.

    I think...

If it's pull out, this is probably the cause of it.

You'd be surprised how much thrust a high helix endmill will exert. I've had bigger endmills pull out of R8 and TG100 collets before too.

Did you program this gradual Z depth spiral, or was that tool pulling out of the collet?

Not picking nits, just suggesting that if it did pull out that you degrease the tool shank and torque the...
