FWIW, in SW '11, it is not necessary to create the reference plane 1/2 the diameter from the center. You can sketch on one of the primary plans (as long as it is perpendicular to the revolve axis)...
I don't know if MC works with multi-body SW parts but here's how you can do what it sounds like you want to do:
Start a new part.
Insert>Part... (select your previously designed part).

"Convert entity" will project a profile from previously created geometry to the current sketch.
