To be able to take any meaningful cuts on 3" stock you really should be using a 8" or 9" lathe at a minimum.

Hi Ian, this machine was fun to build. It is quite capable. The portable milling/drilling head works really well with it to.

I think you are confusing the leadscrew pitch accuracy specs for backlash specs. The purpose of 2 nuts is to minimize backlash and has nothing to do with the leadscrew pitch accuracy.

She is just about finished. It was dismantled, cleaned, painted and the spindle and axis's very carefully aligned....
Those spindle speeders are pricey. Even used ones are and it's hard to find a R8 tapered speeder.
An easy quick and dirty way to get around 5500rpm or so is just swap the motor and driven pulleys....

The tailstock uses a pillar underneath with a stud to attach to any of the central threaded holes in the bed. Very rigid setup but slow to change positions. I seldom ever use the tailstock....

I would not worry about the tapered rollers. The deep grooves are plenty stout in these head stocks. No way your machine will notice the difference.
