    DIY 4th axis

I have some spare parts that might potentially be able to be used to make a light duty 4th axis. I have an R8 spindle shaft and could fabricate a housing and probably find an adapter for a 3-4"...

Re: Best belt drive ever! (If I do say so myself)

Sorry, being lazy but I didn’t want to read through all 29 pages of this thread. Is there a website where this is sold?
    Thanks!

I know this is an old thread but wondering how you were able to adjust out all the backlash? And, the method you used, is it applicable to all/most rotary tables?

Has anyone given any thought to using a TesaStar-MP touch probe? They’re all over eBay and supposedly are compatible with the Renishaw TP20 and also made in the UK. I’d like to try what you guys...

Anyone have a 440 with an enclosure? Thinking about ordering a 440 but after watching vids on YouTube, I’m thinking the enclosure leaks at the bottom of the doors. I emailed Tormach and they said...

Enclosure door ideas - need help

I’m trying to figure out a way to put some doors on my mini mill “enclosure.” It’s basically an open top, 3 sided box around the mill and is only just a little wider than the machine. Doors that...

    X-axis wire management

I'm looking for wire management ideas for the x-axis motor wiring on a mini mill. Drag chain is obviously not an option because of motion in 2 axis. I've searched around and haven't found much for...

Re: Clearpath SDSK for mini mill?

Thanks, Kenny, for the encouraging words. I know Clearpath motors on a mini mill is like putting lipstick on a pig. But it's what I wanted to do, just to be able to see what they're all about. Due to...

Okay, so now that I'm thoroughly discouraged, please tell me what mill in a similar size would be a good choice. I'm assuming there is no such thing, so rephrase the question to what is the smallest...

Re: Clearpath SDSK for mini mill?

Thanks Ray, understood. But what if I one day modify the mini mill to use linear rails or something like that (very possible)...will it then be advantageous to have the high res motors?

    I just...

Well, for the time being, let's forget this is for an X2. You never know what I may end up doing with it.

So Jumper says smoothness will be improved. That makes sense to me. I would think this...

Re: Clearpath SDSK for mini mill?

    Hi again Jim,
Well, I went ahead and ordered the Clearpath motors...went with the ones that produce about 600 oz. of peak torque. Anyway, I went with the "regular" version with 800 steps/rev. I'm...

Re: Clearpath SDSK for mini mill?

    Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply. I believe the mini mill conversions usually use a stepper rated around 350-400 oz/in. I think this is the stall or holding torque rating. When you say to use the same...

If the ballscrew were a bit longer and the motor mount were a bit deeper, perhaps there would be options. The way it's designed, the coupling is, for the most part, within the bored hole in the motor...

    Re: Oldham couplings

Thanks, yes, the coupling is sort of holding up the motor end of the screw, but I think because it's such a small mill and relatively short screw, the ballnut is also doing it's share supporting it. ...

Well, a quick initial test of the Oldham couplings is promising. The ballscrew seems to be supported enough so that the coupling stays engaged enough and, so far, it seems to be quite usable. The...

    Re: Oldham couplings

Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to modify the CNC Fusion kit at this time. I actually don't think a bearing can be added without sourcing a longer ballscrew or sacrificing x-axis travel.
