Not sure about the requirements for upgrade- have not had to deal with that.
I think a lot of the axis/ home information can be set in the parameters-- but I have not monkeyed with that...

I think G52 is the reference point zero. So if you are 'in' G53. You need to have a call G52 and then go to zero

The mill looks to be in good shape. The 432 is a very powerful control- I would not even consider retrofitting to a PC based control. The 432 is capable of at least 4 axis simultaneous control.
