Hey Dayton,
Tried the PM but it's not accepting more than 3k chars... Here's a post I sent to another fellow who was thinking about a new CNC control for his J310:
...
Hey there,
I scanned this in for someone else who had acquired a J310. Link is here: Index of /CNC/J310
You'll find the manual for the J310 in the J310_UM directory.
The manual for the servo...
Good work so far! Impressed by your determination to build a proper home for your new mill. Wish I could give you a perfect answer as to the risk associated with running the control and servos with...
Electronics, servo amps and servo motors will likely all be useable with your current 25amp 3phase service. You may have issues if your taking a big cut at 40ipm... Not sure why your seeing so mush...
Looks like a cool machine for your shop. I had similar fears when I purchased an old 1986 J310... Honestly was not sure if I'd purchased 4,000lbs of scrap or a decent mill... I had sold my beloved...
Hey Kemlin,
Just back at my pc and seeing this... I honestly don't know what your motor setting should be? Chances are it won't hurt to try the constant-torque setting. Also, you should check the...
Hmm, I'm sure you have a copy of this?

Did you mistype and are...
Sounds like your spindle motor might be toast? Since you have 3-phase how does the motor run when wired directly to your shop 3-phase? If it runs fine then check the wiring to your VFD and from VFD...
Hi Kemlin,
The Gecko amps are great. I only hear good things about those amps. Looks like they should work well with your servos.
Regarding you PMDX components... I strongly recommend you...
Hi Bill,
All good here in California! Hope all is well in your neck of the woods and that the current batch of IPA's are turning out delicious. I'm sure they are!
My J310 is working great. I...
Hi Kemlin,
Here's a copy of an email I sent to another fellow who was considering a retrofit:
I did a retrofit on my 1985 2hp Tree J310 that came with a DP20. Servos are Baldor BIG-MHO 90vdc,...
As per Gerry, the setup interface for indexed homing is in the CS-Labs plugin. Two other nice things I'll mention about CS-Labs... The auto PID tuning worked really well on my retro-fit and it's also...
Hi Donny,
I used CS Labs motion control H/W on a retrofit and I can conform the precision home works well. You'll need good quality home switches. The control finds the switch, can be NO or NC,...
Hey Mike, That's a real score on a beast of a machine! Well done. I have it's baby brother (J325) and It's been a wonderful home shop machine. I upgraded the DP10 computer and OP on my J325 but I...
Michael,
I am away from home presently and will not return until Sunday the 12th... I am happy to check the manual then. Perhaps someone else will have advice for you regarding how tight this nut...
Michael,
Find attached better scans of the diagrams you need. I also attached the instructions for removing the entire head which seems to be very simple other than working out how to sling the...
Hi Michael,
I have a J310 built in 1986 and I was lucky to get the owners/maintenance manual when I bought the machine. Find attached photos of the drawings I have for the Z-axis lower head...
Hey Bryan,
You should tune according to the instructions in the amp manual. Tree says rapids should be 200ipm. screw pitch is .2" and reduction is 2:1 so 200ipm comes out to be 2k servo motor RPM....
Hey Bryan,
You are making progress. Good work! Sounds like it's a servo amp or servo motor problem after all?
Regarding input voltage vs RPM, I believe it's a linear relationship. ie. 10vdc =...
Bryan, One more thought came to mind... It's possible that your servo amps are in perfect tune (best to verify however) and that the DP10 needs to be "re-calibrated" for the new amps/servos....
Pics look like my cabinet before I replaced the DP10. I noticed your DP10 has the 12mhz processor board, this is the better CPU. Your DP10 should support drip feed which is something my old DP10 did...
1985... Surprised to hear it was not originally shipped with Servo Dynamics??? I have schematics for my machine in it's original configuration. Let me know if you think those would help and I'll snap...
Very strange! I can't open the .PDF file on my home computer! Internet Exploder says the link is broken... I was able to look at the .pdf at the shop earlier today! The manual also specified the...
Had a quick look at the Manual for your servo amps. It should help you solve any tuning issues. Double check your servo amp jumper for single ended command input vs differential. I believe that the...
Hi Bryan,
I have a J310 but my machine has the original Baldor DC servos and Servo Dynamics amps. The J310, in it's original state, did not need 3 phase for any component in the in the motion...
Hi Geoffrey,
I call myself a "newbie" as well when it comes to CNC work. I had several years with an old Bridgeport however before I sold it and purchased a 1986 vintage J320 with a Dynapath D10...
Win10 is working for me on my CAD machine running V27 Std and I did not have to reinstall. Many are put-off, rightly so I might add, by the automatic updates feature that cannot be turned off. I hope...
Jr, your post brings back memories of working with my grandfather in his shop, well before CNC. He was such a gifted machinist. See it. Visualize it and make it. That's how he did things. Only...
Wow thanks for the attached screenshot. Your tool shows the gold color of the cutter without the "shank" part of an end-mill that's evident in the custom tool I created with Mill Standard. Did you...
