The high complexity of many products in mechanical and plant engineering, vehicle and traffic engineering demands sophisticated manufacturing, training and maintenance processes, which can often only be implemented with well-trained employees. The resulting continuous increase in unit labour costs is one of the challenges in global competition.
In order to survive these challenges, companies are forced to make their processes more and more efficient. This is not a groundbreaking insight; after all, increasing efficiency has been the defining characteristic of industrial manufacturing since its inception. What is new, however, is at what speed and with what means - Industry 4.0 - this is to happen in the future.
As the core of the development towards a 4th industrial revolution, the digital transformation and linking of processes, machines, systems and human action sets the pace. Of course, this development is still in its infancy. Even though many highly integrated systems (ERP, MES, PLM) are successful in digitization, we identify a crucial missing link on the road to successful digital transformation:
The interface between man and system.
We see this missing link above all in the basis of digitization. Currently, the written word, the drawing, the photo still apply there for the transmission and deepening of knowledge and instructions for action.
