Comprehensive Range of Gear Milling Solutions

Among the technologies shown at the Sandvik Coromant SmartHub were the CoroMill® 170 high performance cutter for large gears; the CoroMill 172 versatile and time-saving disc cutters for milling high-quality gear profiles; the CoroMill 176 indexable insert hob that reduces cutting time by up to 70 percent; and CoroMill 177 indexable hob, with a technology that ensures both precision and high torque transfer capability. The company also showcased innovative techniques for the milling of spur, helical and bevel gears.

Delivering precision and reliability in roughing external and internal gears, CoroMill® 170 is a high performance cutter that can cut machining times for large gears in
module range 12-22.

The CoroMill 172 disc cutting concept is available in module 3-10 (DP 8.467-2.540) with gear profiles in accordance with DIN 867 for gears and DIN 5480 for splines.
Thanks to the new indexable carbide insert technology and powerful iLock interface, the component can be machined in flexible non-dedicated machines, such as multi-task machines and machining centres, as well as in hobbing machines. CoroMill 172 can hold a range of inserts, offering flexibility for customers producing gears, racks and splines of close module size and similar tooth profiles.

CoroMill 176 is an indexable insert hob that can reduce cutting time by up to 70 percent, largely through the application of cutting speeds up to four times higher than conventional high speed steel (HSS) cutters and a large number of effective inserts. The cutter offers a full-effective design compared to the half-effective designs on
multi-segment hobs with tangentially mounted inserts. Furthermore, tool life is up to six times longer, which means machine downtime is also reduced in direct proportion.
The successful CoroMill® 176 range of full profile hobs for spur gears, helical gears and splines has recently been extended to incorporate module 3-10 applications.
The CoroMill 176 is now also available in multi-start version.

CoroMill 177 is a segment-built indexable hob with tangential inserts and a unique segment interface covering modules 10 to 18 (DP 2.540 to 1.411). The technology features a new polygon-shaped interface between the segments that ensures precision and high torque transfer capability, while the high accuracy and rigidity of the cutter body ensures both high quality in the components produced and exceptional productivity.

EMO2013 also provided an opportunity for visitors to find out about Sandvik Coromant InvoMilling, a unique approach to milling spur and helical gears using indexable insert cutters. InvoMilling opens up new, cost-efficient ways to produce geared components without dedicated hobbing machines. Complete components can be machined with just a single set up of one machine to reduce overall production times.

Finally, developed in collaboration with tool builder Heller and Voith Turbo, the uP-Gear Technology is offering a flexible, productive and cost-efficient solution for a wide
range of bevel gear sizes.
