    Lathe Chuck Rust??

I have an Okuma Lathe with a 10" Kitagawa chuck. I pulled it off to clean and lub it and was appalled how much rust was in it. The prior owner must have used water based coolants at some point. I cut dry currently and am in the process of putting Trim Sol (water based coolant) into the lathe. I'm also running this coolant in my Okuma mill. This coolant does rust metal if I let it sit. I do test it and have found that higher oil concentrations (12% Brix) will rust less but still rusts. I'm also using distilled water to mix. How do I keep this out of the Lathe chuck when turning? If it sits in that chuck all the metal mating surfaces will rust. What do you guys do? Chucks are way too expensive to get it wrong.

    Thanks
    Matt

best to get a coolant that has good corrosion protection . A lot of the synthetics cimperial makes are great for protecting the machines

hello twice a year, clean the chuck and coolant tank ... like this, you can also inspect wear progress, for the fix jaws and plunger, etc

otherwise, from time to time, put some vaseline in it, etc

rust appears sooner or later, question is how deep ? and you can check the quality of your clamping, by inspecting tir after you craft soft jaws

a chuck that is not ok, will have one fix jaw tilting differently than the other 2 ... thus this is the 1st sign

Chucks are way too expensive to get it wrong
chucks are consumable; not as fast as a carbide insert, but still / kindly
