Can a CAM software used for all machines

If I purchase a CAM does it suffice for the different machines in the shop. Or does it require different modules for different machines. If there are different modules for different machines, does one have to pay for each module or does the package come with all modules packed?

Will those post processors cost extra for each type?

    Hi,
    depends
    i have cut2d cut3d deskproto5 and bobcad

    And every one is different
At cut 2 and 3d there are some post processors if it doesn't fit your problem
    At deskproto
you have the main post processors
    fanuc, siemens , win-nc pc
    emc and mach3

if it doesn't fit to you i don't know

at bobcad i have an yearly software fee so if i need something they adjust the post processors to my needs

i needed it for the tool changer so far 2 times
    but only minor

    just read before you buy

Make a list of the machines you want to use the CAM software on, give that list to the CAM company and ask them if posts are available for each machine on your list and what the posts will cost you, if anything.

Keep in mind that machines like plasma cutters, EDM, and lathes might require costly modules in addition to the mill module that comes with the CAM software.

Some do, most don't. If you are reasonably intelligent with using computers, you can often create your own post processors as well.

Bobcad usually provides one free post processor with purchase, but you may have to pay for any additional post processors (Tkamsker has their support subscription apparently, which probably provides 3 post processors per yer). On the other hand, editing the Bobcad post processors is pretty simple if you understand very basic scripting and I've never had to have Bobcad provided a post processor because of that. If you have a really difficult machine, which requires higher level scripting to get the code right, it's probably worth it to let Bobcad do it for you, but it would have to be pretty complex.

I've owned several other CAM systems ranging from $25 all the way up to $5000, and in every case I've been able to create my post processors myself without any real difficulty. I think that's more the norm for CAM software.

One piece of cam software can program any number of machines.

Unless all your machines are all the same make and model (unlikley) you will need a separate post processor for each machine. These can range in price from anything between $free and $15,00 but I would say between $1000 and $2000 per post is what you would expect to pay from your cam software supplier if they don't have to do any major customisation of the post and your machines are reasonably 'normal'.

Everyone seems very keen to tell you what software to use before they know what you are producing and what sort of machines you have... Can you tell me a little more and maybe I can be more specific.

    Hello,

It depends on what type of machines you are thinking of. Mills, Lathes and Wire EDM machines for instant, will require different modules of software.

Within each module you will need different post-processors - this is the part of the CAM system that produces the G Code - for each machine type, for instance Fanuc controller take fairly standard G Codes, Heidenhain Mills require Conversational format.

Do you have a list of the machine in question ?
