    Lathe tool geometry

Could anyone advise on the tool geometry to make a tool such as shown in the photo?

    I would be cutting brass.

What is this type of lathe operation called?

Thank you and sorry if this is beyond newbie! I may be over thinking it.

    Re: Lathe tool geometry

This would be a Face Grooving or Tre-Panning Tool. There are many tool manufacturers that offer these as standard off the shelf tools but every tool has a minimum diameter that you can face groove at (and in larger sizes maximum diameter) to make sure there is clearance and it doesn't rub.

If you want to make your own tool then you just want to make sure to grind enough backside relief to keep the tool from rubbing as the part rotates.

    Hopefully this helps!

Hi - Could I use something like this to make a 1mm deep and 3mm wide cut on the face groove?
